Description
The Tour
This house lies on Wilsham Street, a peaceful residential road close to the buzz of the surrounding area. It forms part of a smart terrace built using stock brick and enhanced with characterful stucco details. Double-fronted, the smart stained glass front door is set centrally, at the top of stone steps and between a pair of French doors.
Entry is to the dining room, an airy space with white walls that enhance the painterly quality of light that enters from the front. Understated cornicing snakes around the wall-ceiling seam, and dark oak floorboards offer a deep tonal contrast.
Next door is the kitchen, divided from the dining room by a pocket door. Here, minimal ohh-white laquered units are topped with smooth marble countertops and walls are picked out in a soft pistachio shade ('Bone' by Farrow and Ball). There is a Smeg range centrally, and a cut-out sink placed beneath a garden-facing window. Other appliances include an American-style fridge, also by Smeg, and a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer by Miele.
Sublime Sapele stairs with twisted iron spindles wind through the core of the house. It connects to the lower-ground floor in the first instance, occupied by a large living space. The room is versatile, with built-in storage and a door that provides access to the garden. There is also access to a bedroom here, which would make for a brilliant study.
On the first floor are the remaining two bedrooms; both are beautifully realised spaces. The principal has an elongated headboard and is lit partly by skylights that stud a staggeringly tall, pitched ceiling. Another pocket door reveals an en suite shower room with a combination of marble and terracotta tiles warmed with underfloor heating.
A nine-over-nine sash window in the other bedroom is a reminder of the home’s period distinction. The walls here have been painted Slipper Satin by Farrow and Ball, and there is plenty of storage space in fitted wardrobes with custom Flawk handles. A separate bathroom with a marble-clad bathtub serves this space.
Outdoor Space
White-painted walls enclose the south-facing rear garden, a tranquil space laid with large limestone flagstones. A bed has been carved out on one side and is stocked with evergreen plants. There is plenty of room here for dining and/or relaxing in the day-long natural light.
The Area
Wilsham Street is near the greenery of Avondale Park, between Notting Hill and Holland Park. A minute away from the house, the grounds encompass formal gardens, sporting greens, a café and what is considered Britain’s first floral lawn, designed to provide biodiversity for the immediate area.
Holland Park, one of London’s finest, is a short walk south, with tennis courts and a Japanese-inspired garden. Kensington Gardens is a slightly longer walk west and is home to the Serpentine Galleries and the James Pennethorne-designed Italian Gardens of Hyde Park.
The house is also brilliantly positioned for easy reach of the shops, restaurants, and markets of Portobello Road, Golborne Road and Westbourne Grove.
There are plenty of cafés and restaurants in nearby Notting Hill, including the two Michelin-starred Ledbury, the three Michelin-starred Core by Clare Smyth, and Ottolenghi. The Electric Cinema, The Gate Theatre and Electric House are all within walking distance. We've written extensively about the area in our Journal.
The conveniences of Westfield London are also close at hand, and the Soho House members’ club, White City House, is a short walk away.
There are some excellent schools nearby in both the state and independent sectors. Within walking distance are Maria Montessori Notting Hill, Thomas Jones Primary School, La Petite Ecole Bilingue, Kensington Aldridge Academy and Notting Hill Prep.
Holland Park Underground station is nearby for fast links to central London. Shepherd’s Bush is also near, providing convenient access to the Overground network. Paddington station is close for the Heathrow Express, services to the west of England, and the Elizabeth line, which also provides easy access to Heathrow as well as central London. There is also easy access to the M4, the A4 and A40.
