THE HISTORY
Centre Point has been a marker on London's skyline since the 1960s - a confident modernist tower announcing the West End as you arrive at Tottenham Court Road. Designed by George Marsh of R. Seifert & Partners for developer Harry Hyams, the 34-storey building was completed in 1966 and was one of London's very first skyscrapers. Its finely detailed precast concrete lattice and full-height glazing were pioneering at the time, using modular construction techniques that allowed the tower to rise quickly above the historic streets of St Giles.
From the outset, Centre Point was conceived as best-in-class office space. Hyams' vision was for a single blue-chip occupier to take the entire building - a bold move in an era when London was just beginning to think vertically, with generous floorplates, dramatic corner windows and panoramic views over the West End.
Centre Point attracted a succession of high-profile tenants. Most notably, from 1980 to 2014 it served as the headquarters of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), reinforcing its status as a national business address at the heart of the capital. Over the decades, perceptions of the architecture evolved from experimental to iconic. In 1995 the building was granted Grade II listed status, formally recognising its importance in the story of modern London, and in 2009 it received the Concrete Society's Mature Structures Award for the quality and longevity of its construction.
One of the more human chapters in Centre Point's history is its connection to the youth homelessness charity Centrepoint. In 1969, Reverend Kenneth Leech opened a night shelter for young people in the basement of nearby St. Anne's Church. With the Centre Point tower rising nearby as a prominent London landmark, the new charity took the name "Centrepoint" - positioning itself as a central, visible refuge for those in need.
Over time, the organisation has grown into a leading national charity supporting thousands of young people each year, and the shared name has become part of the building's wider cultural story: a reminder that this corner of the West End has long been associated with both ambition and social conscience.
