Description

Positioned along the quiet residential stretch of St Dunstan's Road in Hammersmith, this spacious terraced house has been comprehensively renovated by Studio From. Arranged across four floors, the house pairs robust natural materials, including high-quality marble, with finely crafted bespoke joinery throughout. Outside, a peaceful patio garden acts as an extension of the interior plan.

The Tour

The front door opens into a monochrome-tiled hall. Bespoke inset hanging storage is neatly integrated. Newly rewired and replumbed, the house has also been fitted with new, double-glazed sash windows throughout. Underfloor heating runs throughout the entire ground floor.

The main living space lies off the hallway. The kitchen is at the front; fitted beneath a shuttered window, a built-in bench provides a perch to watch the world go by. High ceilings enhance the sense of volume, and oak floorboards run throughout. Understated green units are topped with Greek Ionassus marble worktops.

The room flows into a central dining space, where built-in bench seating is set against timber wall panelling. Opposite, a hidden bar is revealed behind discreet joinery, complete with deep storage on either side. The slightly sunken living space lies beyond, with concrete floors, oak shelving and full-height doors to the garden.

There is also a generous bathroom on this level, finished in textured Tinos marble with dramatic, organic veining. A separate laundry space with integrated storage is positioned alongside.

Stairs ascend to the first floor, where there are two bedrooms and a serene bathroom. The principal suite is at the front; immaculately finished, it has a walk-in wardrobe, an en suite shower room finished with sublime green-accented Italian marble, and a dedicated office space.

There are two more bedrooms upstairs, both with built-in storage and access to extensive eaves space. Another bathroom lies here, with striking sea-green Italian tiles and a shower beneath a Velux window.

Outdoor Space

A paved patio continues the polished concrete flooring from the living area, creating a seamless flow from inside to out. Three olive trees grow, lending structure and softness. There is plenty of room for outdoor dining here, and privacy is provided by high slatted fences.

The Area

St Dunstan's Road lies close to the River Thames and a brilliant array of pubs and places to eat, including perennial favourite The River Café and atmospheric pubs like The Dove and The Chancellors. Hammersmith has an array of amenities, including a Waitrose and an M&S. Riverside Studios has an excellent film programme, while the Lyric Theatre puts on shows throughout the year.

Within walking distance is Lillie Road, a renowned retail destination home to a wide variety of antique, artefacts and decorative arts dealers, including Henry Saywell, Quindry, Puckhaber and Maison Artefact. High Street Kensington is also a longer stroll (or short Underground journey) away, along with Holland Park, the Design Museum, the brilliant Leighton House and Japan House. The museums of South Kensington are also easily reached.

Some of London's best schools, both private and state-run, are a short distance from the house. Barons Court (Piccadilly and District lines) and Hammersmith (District, Hammersmith and City, Circle and Piccadilly lines) Underground stations are a seven and 13-minute walk away respectively. There are also excellent bus connections locally.

About The Modern House, London

St Alphege Hall Kings Bench Street London SE1 0QX
Industry affiliations:

The Modern House has been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005. We represent houses and apartments in urban and rural locations throughout the country, from our offices in central London.

Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced Modern Movement architecture to a British audience. The central themes of Modernism are at the heart of all of the properties we sell: flowing space, natural light, truth to materials, and the relationship between architecture and its environment.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including lofts, factory conversions, architects' own homes, and period houses with excellent extensions and superior interiors. We love selling houses, and we only sell houses that we love.

This much we know -

A home should lift the spirits. The rudimentary purpose of a building is to provide shelter, but in the hands of the right architect, it can frame space and capture light in a life-enhancing way. At The Modern House, we sell homes that inspire us. Our portfolio of properties is carefully curated and extensively researched, with images by editorial photographers.

Estate agency is about people. We work with the most extraordinary range of people, who are brought together by the need to move house and an interest in good design. Our aim is to provide them all with a positive experience. The members of our team have academic training in art, architecture, journalism, literature and photography. They are able to speak with honesty and authority rather than resorting to cliché, and are proud of what they do. In an industry that's synonymous with mistrust, people come to The Modern House for a human approach to buying and selling.

You're never too old to learn something new. When The Modern House came into existence, it pioneered a new marketplace for Britain's best modern architecture. More than a decade later, we still feel the same sense of excitement every day. The built environment is in a state of constant flux, with people carrying out remarkable new projects in all corners of the country. You never know what might be found behind a hedgerow or an assuming warehouse door.

Pastiche is passé. We believe that contemporary architecture should be of its time. Without a modernising spirit, how are we to progress? It's equally essential that our country's Modernist heritage is rigorously safeguarded for future generations. By championing the cause of thoughtful architecture, and raising awareness among the buying public, we try to have a positive influence on the built environment.
