The department of Nievre belongs to the Burgundy region which some still refer to as the Bourgogne region. It is located in the centre of France, and has borders with Allier (in the Auvergne), Saone-et-Loire, Yonne, Cote d'Or, Cher and Loiret (in the Centre region). Nevers is the capital of the department, the other large towns are Chateau-Chinon, Clamecy and Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire. The department boasts 313 very nice towns and villages, and 4 historical regions: Bourgogne-Nivernaise, Nivernais-Morvan, Nevers sud-Nivernais and Puisaye-Forterre.
You may recognise a few 'famous wine' names as this one of the major wine producing regions of France. As this is a rural area we find that house prices are rather low, it gives you the opportunity to invest in a bigger property than you would do in other regions. You can transform some old farm complex into a guest gite business quite effectively because you will not have difficulty finding paying holiday makers in summer.
Nievre is a rather touristic destination. It takes advantage of its geographic location, next to the Centre region, and it has 2 rivers, the Loire and the Allier, the latter being a tributary of the former. As we mentioned earlier the area is renowned world wide for its wine production, known as Vins de Bourgogne.
