Description
Description
This exemplary, modern three-bedroom house, with car port and private gardens, was built in the early 1960s to a design by renowned architects Peter Foggo and David Thomas. It can be found on sought-after Langton Way, a picturesque, unmade road moments from the green open spaces of Blackheath.
Set back from the road, the single-storey elevation rests stealthily behind a high brick wall, with access to the sheltered car port from a cobbled driveway. Entry is through a paved a front courtyard with shed, brick planters and a brick-paved patio at the foot of the house.
A glazed sliding front door opens to an open plan hall, kitchen and living room with immediate views through to the mature, lawn garden at the rear. The ceilings are clad in pine, and the walls and floating partitions, in cedar. The flooring is narrow-slatted maple. A central roof light with clerestorey panels protrudes above the concrete and timber-portal frame, flooding the space with light. The kitchen is by Charles Hurst of Greenwich, with original cabinets, and worktops of quartz.
The kitchen is open at each end and through a space in the partition one interacts with the expansive open-plan living and dining room. Huge swathes of glazing ensure light from both aspects, blurring the boundaries between inside and out. The current owner has done much to restore the property with a sensitive modernisation. At the rear, glazing is heated to provide an ambient temperature for winter dining. A painted brick wall extends along one side and at its centre has been added a wood burner. The flat roof was replaced in 2012 and carries with it a 25 year guarantee. External access is at the centre of the plan, to a splendid garden with shed.
Moving left from the front entrance is a study providing access to a hall with plenty of storage, and in turn the three bedrooms. There are two large double bedrooms with beautiful original built-in wardrobes, and a smaller, versatile bedroom, currently used as a reading room and guest bedroom. On the right of the hall is a large shower room with Corian walk-in shower.
The house featured in the 2016 spy-thriller film adaptation of the Le Carre thriller, ‘Our Kind of Traitor’, starring Ewan McGregor and Damian Lewis. The location was known by the crew as ‘Hector’s House’ and was used as the home of MI6 agent Hector, the character played by Damian Lewis. It is clearly recognisable in the closing scenes of the film and both Ewan McGregor and Damian Lewis feature in the scene(s) shot at the house.
Langton Way is superbly located on the north-east side of Blackheath village, beside the beautiful heath. Blackheath is one of London’s most popular and attractive residential areas and has a great selection of shops, restaurants and pubs. Greenwich Park, part of the Greenwich World Heritage Site, is a short stroll across the heath, which itself is part of the protected World Heritage Buffer Zone. The World Heritage site extends through Greenwich Park and down to the River Thames, an area rich in history and outstanding beauty. The surrounding areas are well known for outstanding schools, expansive open spaces, and excellent local shops and restaurants.
Blackheath station runs direct services to London Bridge, Cannon Street, Victoria, Charing Cross and Waterloo East (with journey times of approximately 15-25 minutes). A DLR service to Canary Wharf and Bank, taking approximately 15 minutes and 27 minutes respectively, runs from nearby Lewisham.
