Description

This striking apartment lies on the top floor of Trinity Court, a remarkable art deco building in Bloomsbury, close to Holborn and King’s Cross. It has a private balcony with views across this leafy, picturesque part of central London.

The Building

Described in a contemporary brochure as “a new building of the most modern, central and economical [...] specifically designed for business and professional people”, Trinity Court was built between 1934 and 1935 using a steel-frame construction and a distinctive white render. Strikingly symmetrical, each apartment in the block has its own balcony with the railings and Crittall window frames painted externally in a playful shade of blue. Despite its period distinction, it remains unlisted.

The Tour

Original art deco features run throughout the building's communal spaces. Last refurbished in 2013, its period feel has been preserved and sympathetically enhanced. The two original 'birdcage' lifts are still in place - these were used in a celebrated fight sequence in Neil Jordan's 1986 film 'Mona Lisa'.

Entry to this apartment is via an original door, which opens into a hallway with space to hang coats and kick off shoes. Floor-to-ceiling cupboards provide plenty of storage space.

Beyond is a light-filled living space, where original Crittall windows capture views towards St Pancras, Islington and the Barbican estate. There is room to sit and dine here, and a glazed door opens to the balcony.

The kitchen is tucked around the corner, with neat light-green units and Miele/AEG appliances. Iroko countertops complement the walnut boards that run throughout the apartment.

A bedroom lies adjacent to the living area, with an internal window that borrows plenty of natural brightness. Here, storage space is cleverly concealed behind a large curtain. A beautifully appointed bathroom is finished with recycled wall panels from Smile Plastics, which mimic terrazzo and marble. Curved sanitary ware nods to the building's art deco style.

Outdoor Space

A compact but delightful balcony opens at the front of the apartment, with space for a table and chairs and potted plants. East-facing, it catches the morning sun and remains a pleasant spot to sit in the evening.

The Area

Set on the boundary between Bloomsbury and Clerkenwell, the Gray's Inn Road is brilliantly located for some of London's best offerings. The British Museum and British Library are nearby, as are the Charles Dickens Museum, the Foundling Museum, the Wellcome Collection, and Sir John Soane's Museum. The Brunswick Centre has a variety of shops, a Curzon Cinema, and a large Waitrose supermarket.

Lamb's Conduit Street is close by, and is home to the renowned Noble Rot, Honey and Co. and Ciao Bella as well as a host of fashionable shops. The restaurants and bars of Clerkenwell, Exmouth Market, Covent Garden and Soho are all within walking distance too, as are the colleges, institutes and hospitals of the University of London.

Despite its central location, there are plenty of green spaces near Trinity Court, and the apartment overlooks St. Andrew's Gardens, which adds to a surprising sense of quiet. Coram's Fields and Lincoln's Inn Fields are also close.

King's Cross St Pancras (Circle, Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria lines, National Rail Services and Eurostar) and Russell Square (Piccadilly line) stations are both around 10 minutes away on foot, with Chancery Lane (Central line) and Farringdon (Circle, Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan and Elizabeth lines, plus Thameslink) stations just beyond. The West End can be reached in around half an hour on foot.
