CALASCIO - L'AQUILA PROVINCE
Calascio is located 1,210 metres above sea level in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is found in a wonderful position, just below the renowned fortress called ‘La Rocca- which was an important defensive centre in the Middle Ages. It is the highest citadel in the Apennines and was built exclusively for military purposes.
Calascio-s picturesque streets with stone houses and arched passageways portray its traditional Apennine setting. The small population of 136 has access to a post office, 2 bars and 4 restaurants. More services can be found in the nearby towns of Ofena, Capestrano and Castel del Monte.
Its location in the National Park provides many outdoor activities including trekking, mountain biking, horse riding, climbing, paragliding and wildlife spotting. The nearby ski resort of Campo Imperatore has 4 ski lifts, 13.1 kms of alpine slopes and 14 kms of cross-country routes.
Each year, in August, the famous Pecorino Cheese Festival is held with many stalls selling local dishes and artisan products. There are several demonstrations showing the preparation of the many gastronomic products for sale. A celebration not to be missed!
