Description

A quintessential country cottage with stone and rendered elevations under a slate roof. The cottage is situated alongside the Brecon and Monmouth Canal on the fringe of an historic village, the interior is as pretty as the exterior, tastefully presented and has much character and period features. Aside from the idyllic location alongside the canal, the cottage has glorious views towards the Skirrid Mountain and Brecon Beacons National Park.

Overview

The cottage was originally a dwelling for a canal worker, the lengthsman, who would have had responsibility for a stretch of the canal and would probably have stored supplies in the cottage for passing boats. The cottage has been extended and refurbished to a high specification providing a beautiful home.

Step Inside

Sympathetically refurbished, the interior includes flagstone floors, exposed timbers, oak floors and a stone inglenook fireplace in the sitting room. Enter through a wooden door into an entrance hall with a flagstone floor and space for boots and coats. Steps lead down to a lower level where a useful study/storage/laundry room is situated with door to the outside. From the hall, stone steps lead up to an attractive sitting room which is flooded with light from the front windows overlooking the canal and window overlooking the side elevation. The room has much character with stone fireplace housing woodburning stove, wooden floor and exposed timbers. From the sitting room is a door to the kitchen and stairs to the first floor. The spacious and light kitchen dining room is fitted with a comprehensive range of painted wooden cupboards with granite worksurface over.

...

A feature of the kitchen is the electric Aga with granite splashback, a nod to the country cottage feel of this beautiful house. Ample space for dining table and chairs. A door leads from the kitchen to a decked area with railings and a gate adjoining the towpath, an ideal place to enjoy the breathtaking views especially the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Blorenge Mountains.

First Floor

There are two sets of stairs from the sitting room. The first lead to a pretty bedroom/sitting room with a window to the side, the second lead to a bathroom with a roll top bath, walk in shower, basin and W.C. at half landing level. The stairs continue to the first floor where two more bedrooms are located. A spacious and light bedroom with a Juliette balcony and superb views and the Principal bedroom with an en-suite shower room and windows overlooking the canal.

Outside

The property is approached via a gravel driveway which offers off road parking/turning for several cars. The front of the cottage is bordered by a low level stone wall adjoining the canal tow path with a pedestrian wrought iron gate providing access. The mature and established landscaped lawned garden is bordered by planted beds and fruit trees. To one side of the garden is a Wooden outbuilding with a pitched roof, a former stable/tack room which is ideal for storage or could, subject to any necessary consents, be used as a study/annexe. From the kitchen is a raised decked area from which there are breathtaking views. The garden has a water supply and security lighting and a stone built log store.

Location

Located on the outskirts of Llanover and adjoining the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal, the cottage enjoys an idyllic location whilst being accessible to the A4042 which connects to the A40 and A449 which in turn link to the M4/M5/M50 motorway networks. The historic village of Llanover is located approximately 5 miles from the market town of Abergavenny where a wide range of amenities can be found with chain and individual shops (including a Waitrose supermarket close by), banks, doctors, dentists, theatre, cinema, library, schools and local general hospital. A main line railway station can be found in Abergavenny. The picturesque town of Usk is approximately 5 miles where there are a number of individual shops. The area is renowned for its excellent restaurants/pubs and also for the annual Abergavenny Food Festival which is held each September.

...

The historic village of Llanover was the home of Lady Llanover, renowned for her love of the Welsh costume and heritage as well as being the Lady who closed the local inns in the area! The Goose and Cuckoo Pub, a traditional and homely country pub, is situated on the mountain above the village and escaped being closed, the pub together with the local Llanover Village Hall provide a hub for the local community. Many of the properties and land around Llanover still belong to the Llanover Estate and private properties in the area in such an appealing and accessible location are rarely available.
