Description

This serene three-bedroom home sits on the corner of a quiet residential street in Whitechapel. The house extends over four floors, including a contemporary kitchen and living space designed by Bernard Tulkens for Tectonics Architects. Original period features include tall sash windows and cast-iron fireplaces, while a courtyard and a private balcony provide opportunities for sitting out. Whitechapel station is close by, and some of East London’s best-loved shops and restaurants are within walking distance.

The Tour

A black-painted door with rectangular fanlight sits within a newly re-pointed brick façade end of terrace house. The door opens onto a welcoming entrance hall with fitted storage. Stairs descend to the lower ground floor, where the main living space is found. Designed by Bernard Tulkens of Tectonics Architects, the space flows effortlessly between kitchen, living and dining areas. Two recessed alcoves, flooded with light from original "Hastings" cast iron and glass vault pavements, are perfect for keeping house plants, and there is underfloor heating.

A vintage cast-iron fireplace occupies a central position, flanked by tall fitted bookshelves. In the kitchen, stainless steel kitchen cabinetry has a birchwood worktop, complemented by a smart Foresso splashback. Appliances include a new combi boiler, a water softener facility and a new Nest thermostat system. A glazed door opens onto a peaceful courtyard garden, where ceramic tiles run underfoot.

A second reception room sits on the ground floor, illuminated by a series of shuttered sash windows and a working vintage cast iron fireplace. An adjacent study has a mezzanine level overhead, currently used as a sleeping space.

The principal bedroom lies on the top floor. It has tall fitted storage and a double-glazed sash window with views toward the street. A large en suite bathroom has a copper-clad bathtub with overhead shower, and a peaceful balcony is accessed from the landing. There is an insulated, floored loft above with pull-out ladder and light.

Two further bedrooms are found on the first floor. One frames views of the street with double-glazed sash windows, while the other looks to the courtyard below. There is a shared shower room.

Outdoor Space

A private courtyard accessed from the kitchen has space for potted herbs and plants.

A balcony, with a wood-tiled floor, is accessible from the second-floor landing is a peaceful spot for sitting out.

The Area

Whitechapel is home to a thriving range of traditional pubs, cafés and restaurants. Neighbourhood favourites include Tayyabs and East London institution Rinkoff’s Bakery. The independent Genesis Cinema is a 16-minute walk away, and the ever-impressive Whitechapel Gallery is also close by.

To the west are Brick Lane and Spitalfields, where there are plenty of options for dining, including Ottolenghi, St John and Bubala. Redchurch Street is also within walking distance and has excellent shops and restaurants like APC, Earl of East and Brat.

For green spaces, the historic Ford and Sidney Square gardens are within a few minutes’ walk of the house. Also close by are many of East London’s finest parks: Weaver’s Fields, Bethnal Green Gardens, Mile End Park, Victoria Park, and the historic churchyard of St Dunstan's, to name a few. The charming Stepney Green City Farm is also nearby.

Whitechapel station is less than a 10-minute walk away and serves the District, Hammersmith & City and Elizabeth lines, as well as the Overground. The West End can be reached in around 12 minutes, and Heathrow in approximately 39 minutes.

Industry affiliations:

The Modern House is an estate agency that helps people live in more thoughtful and beautiful ways. We have been successfully selling Britain's finest modern architecture since 2005, representing design-led homes throughout the UK from our offices in central London.

The Modern House meets the growing demand for exceptional living spaces of all kinds, including flats, lofts, conversions, architects' own homes, new builds and period houses. Our name is inspired by FRS Yorke's celebrated book 'The Modern House' (1934), which introduced modernist architecture to a British audience.

We are excited by homes that pay attention to the timeless principles of modernism: space, light, materials, nature and decoration. Combined, we believe design can be a powerful force for good.
