Lochgilphead has a good range of local shops and amenities that adequately cater for everyday needs and requirements. There is a Co-op and a Tesco Express and the town has a good range of professional services. Further shopping is available in Oban which includes a Tesco and Tesco home delivery service and other supermarkets. Glasgow is the nearest major city and has a complete and extensive range of shopping, cultural, higher educational and leisure services normally associated with a major city centre.
There is reputable local primary and secondary schooling in Lochgilphead Joint Campus with a school bus service which is also a service bus. Further education is available locally through Argyll College which is an academic partner of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

Namely, Kilmartin, one of Scotland’s largest and most significant prehistoric sites, is renowned for its rich concentration of ancient monuments and archaeological heritage.
About 6.5 miles by road to the west is the picturesque village of Crinan with its pretty little and sheltered harbour, basin and anchorage. Crinan forms the northwestern sea end of the Crinan Canal which starts at Ardrishaig in the south on Loch Gilp. The canal is always a colourful spectacle with passing yachting, cruising and pleasure craft using the waterway to connect the inland sea lochs, the Clyde estuary and the Kyles of Bute with the more testing sailing of the western Isles.
The area offers a fine range of relaxing outdoor pursuits with pleasant canal-sidewalks and more testing hill walks. Field sports are available in the area and include stalking, driven and walked up shooting as well as fishing, both sea and inland hill loch. The Mid Argyll swimming pool is in Lochgilphead.
