Description
The Building
Originally built in 1811 to a design by architect Charles Beazley, the Goldsmith Buildings were commissioned by John Perry, a London goldsmith and alderman. The premises have continued to serve as almshouses until 2010, when they were converted into 18 private homes by Robson Warren Architects. The stucco-fronted chapel sets the tone for this elegant terrace, with a porticoed entrance flanked by Ionic columns. Impeccably maintained, the beautiful gardens and communal areas were recently the subject of a comprehensive renovation.
The Tour
This house forms part of an elegant terrace, where all doors are painted in matching blue tones and six-over-six sash windows line the traditional brick façade.
Entrance is to the hall, with the main reception room immediately to the left. Here, the walls are washed in delicate pastel tones with subtly contrasting white rails and skirtings. An original tiled fireplace provides a focal point in the seating area and is flanked by alcoves on either side with built-in shelving. A large, south-facing sash window frames views of the leafy front garden and Acton Park beyond.
Hardwood floorboards extend underfoot and continue to the kitchen at the rear of the plan. Here, contemporary grey units are arranged in a U-shape and complemented by quartz surfaces and a red splashback. Appliances from Neff include an electric hob, oven and dishwasher. There is room to accommodate a dining table and access to a handy understairs pantry.
From the hallway, a staircase leads to the first floor, where a generous bedroom is positioned at the front. Its walls are painted in soothing tones, and soft carpet has been added underfoot. The bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe area; there is also additional storage under the stairs. Alcoves at each side of the bed provide space for a small desk area and additional built-in storage.
The adjacent bathroom is fitted with mosaic tiles and has a large shower over the bath. From the landing is handy additional built-in storage, one of which is a wardrobe.
Outdoor Space
A private terrace, positioned at the back and accessible from the kitchen, is ideal for dining outside and relaxing in the warmer season. A large, formal landscaped communal garden with a variety of fruit trees, extensive lawns, and planted borders lies behind the house. Its perimeter is lined with neat shrubs and mature trees, creating a wonderfully serene atmosphere.
The Area
The green expanse of Acton Park is directly opposite the house, with wonderful expanses of greenery, it's also home to tennis courts, a skatepark and outdoor gym. Goldsmiths' lies along the lively Churchfield Road, lined with an excellent variety of independent shops and cafés, including beloved Layla bakery. The independent ActOne cinema is a short walk away on the High Street, and there is a David Lloyd gym a 5-minute walk away to the east of the park. Westfield shopping centre is also within easy reach.
Around a 40-minute walk eastwards is Shepherd's Bush Market, along with grassroots music venue Bush Hall and the renowned Bush Theatre. Television Centre, independent restaurants such as Kricket and Soho House members’ club, White City House, are all in easy walking distance.
Chiswick is a 30-minute walk or 15-minute bus ride to the south; its High Road and Turnham Green Terrace are lined with parades of boutiques, restaurants and cafés, including Chief Coffee and High Road House as well as Chiswick Cinema. The Duke of Sussex and the Swan pub are loved by locals.
Kew Gardens and Richmond are only a few stops away, less than 20 mins away by Overground from Acton Central.
Acton Central station (Mildmay line) is a three-minute walk from the house, and the Underground stations of East Acton (Central Line) and Acton Town (Piccadilly and District Lines) are also within easy reach on foot. Heathrow Airport can be reached in under 40 minutes by car or public transport via the Elizabeth line from Acton Main Line, under a 20-minute walk away. The area is also well served by buses.
