About the area
Kingsdon is an historic village a couple of miles from the small country town of Somerton, which was possibly King Alfred's capital of Wessex. The village comprises mainly period properties with a scattering of more contemporary houses, a village school, a community shop, a great gastro pub called the Kingsdon Inn, and a friendly community.

Somerton provides a wide range of local services including a small supermarket, Doctors Surgery, Library, Butchers, Newsagent, Chemist and Post Office. Close by are other small towns including Street, Glastonbury, Wells, Castle Cary, Yeovil and Sherborne, whilst Bristol, Bath and Taunton are also within easy reach.

On the outskirts of the nearby town of Castle Cary (20 minutes) is the railway station with its direct line to Paddington, and the A303 just a five-minute drive away provides access to London and the Southwest. Castle Cary is characterised by period buildings constructed of the distinctive honey coloured stone for which the area is well known. It remains a delightful small market town with a number of traditional shops and boutiques within the Conservation Area in which a policy of strict planning control operates to prevent inappropriate development.

“The Newt in Somerset” just outside Castle Cary is home to beautiful countryside walks set in the grounds of a Georgian country estate. Within the estate there are a Hotel & Spa, Farm shop, restaurants and house & garden shop.

Bruton is located 3 miles north west of Castle Cary, it dates back to Roman times and today is a charming small town with various shops and amenities, including the 'Hauser & Wirth' Art & Exhibition Gallery, 'The Roth Bar & Grill', the Michelin starred 'Osip', the ever popular dining experience 'At The Chapel', and of course an excellent choice of schools including King's School and Sexey's School.

There are excellent state and independent schools locally that include a well-respected primary school in Somerton and secondary schools (and 6th form colleges) in Street and Huish Episcopi. Independent schools include Millfield (at Street & Glastonbury), Hazlegrove, Wells Cathedral, Downside, All Hallows and the schools at Bruton and Sherborne. There are lots of good restaurants and pubs in the town and surrounding villages, and most sporting, cultural and social requirements can be met.

From the Podimore roundabout on the A303, take the A372 towards Long Sutton, turn right onto the B3151 and head towards the centre of the village via Lodge Road and Manor Road.
