Olhão, once a fishing village, is now an important residential and tourist town, and the capital of the Ria Formosa, situated near Faro, the district capital, and the airport. It is a town that preserves its traditional Algarvean and Moorish features, surrounded by the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and offers quick and easy access by scheduled ferry, pleasure boat or sea taxi to the islands of Armona, Culatra and Farol.
It boasts the best markets in the district, with its vegetable and fish squares much appreciated for their variety of fresh produce; on Saturdays, the market extends outdoors all year round, next to the Ria Formosa, and is visited by people from all over the Algarve.
The term ‘Cubist architecture’ was coined to describe the typical houses in Olhão’s working-class neighbourhoods, given their appearance as clusters of cubic buildings: the Barreta and Levante neighbourhoods.
