Blackpool is the most popular holiday destination in the United Kingdom. The town relies on tourism for income and from 1900-1950 it was a massively popular holiday destination for factory workers from northern England who holidayed there in large numbers.
It is also a preferred destination of visitors from Glasgow and reputedly has more hotels and B&Bs than the whole of Portugal. The Pleasure Beach has some of the biggest roller coasters in Europe and has always been a huge attraction for families.
The spectacular annual illuminations along the promenade are world renowned, as is the historic pier and the beach donkeys. Shopping is good, too, with the best areas being Bank Hey Street, Church Street, Victoria Street, Abingdon Street, Talbot Road and The Houndshill Shopping Centre.
Blackpool is well served by rail, bus, tram and air networks. The Blackpool trams are not only functional, but have traditionally been regarded as a tourist attraction. Blackpool International Airport operates regular charter flights, and the M55 is the town's main access to the national road network.
It's easy to see why Blackpool has earned its legendary reputation as the pleasure palace of the north. Manchester, Liverpool and all major northern cities are within easy travelling distance, a fact which ticks yet another box in its favour.
