In York - once England's second city - tourism has become a key element of the local economy. And with there being so much for people of all ages to see and do in this famously walled historic city in North Yorkshire, it's no wonder property hunters come from far and wide to find a great new home there.
Property in York - whether to buy or rent - can be as diverse as the city itself. Charming mews cottages, smart townhouses, elegant mansions, and a wide range of appealing detached and semi-detached family houses can all be found for sale in York, as can lovely flats and apartments (some split-level).
The University of York is hugely impressive; countless former alumni return there regularly after they've completed their studies, so strong is their attachment. There are also 67 local authority schools with over 24,000 pupils in the city, and six independent schools for both girls and boys.
York's famous gothic cathedral, York Minster, is one of Northern Europe's largest and draws thousands of visitors annually. Other sites and attractions in the city include The National Railway Museum, The Yorvik Viking Centre, and the wonderful Shambles: voted Britain's most picturesque shopping street.
Talking of shopping, whether you are looking for antiques and books, jewellery and clothing, home and gardenware, health and beauty products, delicious local produce, or unique ideas and gifts, you'll be sure to find what you're after in York's many shops, boutiques and arcades. Newgate Market is also open daily in the city.
Property hunters looking to move to York can easily get there by car, coach and rail. High speed trains from London will whisk you to York in two hours. Meanwhile Hull and Newcastle ports are both within a two-hour drive. And if you prefer to fly, Manchester, Newcastle and Leeds/Bradford airports are within easy reach.
