The Haydon Hundred annual cycling challenge is held each summer, starting and finishing in the village, taking in Hadrian’s Wall and parts of the North Pennines en route.
Sailing, canoeing, kayaking and water skiing are available at Kielder Water and Forest Park, 34 miles away, which not only boasts the largest manmade lake in Europe and the biggest forest in England, but offers some of the best stargazing in the country, thanks to a lack of light pollution.
History buffs will find Vindolanda, Houseteads and Chesters Roman forts – part of Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site – less than 10 miles from the development, while Corbridge Roman Town is a 15-minute drive away.

A small supermarket can be found in the centre of the village along with several other shops, while Hexham, 10 minutes away by car, hosts a twice weekly market and a twice monthly farmers’ market in Market Place. The town’s vibrant commercial district is focused around Fore Street, St Mary’s Chare and Market Street with independents and high-street retailers welcoming shoppers from surrounding villages and further afield.

The village has both a primary and a secondary school, while a number of well-regarded schools can be found in nearby Hexham. For further and higher education, Northumberland College has a campus in Hexham, while the nearest universities are in Newcastle upon Tyne around 28 miles away and in Carlisle 30 miles away.

Showfields is located a short drive from the A69, facilitating travel to Newcastle to the east and Carlisle to the west. Haydon Bridge railway station is within walking distance of the development and offers regular services to commuters, with journey times to Hexham of around 10 minutes, and to Carlisle and Newcastle of around 45 minutes. Other major roads easily accessible from the development include the A686 for Penrith and the A68 for Darlington and Edinburgh.
