Bideford is a Port and Market town, which straddles the River Torridge just 3 miles inland from the North Devon coast.
Fondly and historically known as “The Little White Town” and at one time recognised as the third largest Port in the country.
Sir Richard Grenville sailed from Bideford to meet the Spanish Galleons at the Armada during the 16th Century in “The Revenge”.
Still a working Port and noted for its 2 bridges – the old stone Long Bridge which has Mediaeval origins and the new Torridge Bridge completed in the early 1990’s and forming part of the A39 Link Road which allows ease of communication to Barnstaple approx. 10 miles and the M5 motorway connection just north of Tiverton approx. 45 miles.
A beautiful and rugged North Devon coastline allowing miles of unspoilt Cliffside walks with seaside activities at Westward Ho! with its long sandy and safe bathing beach also popular for surfing with the adjoining Royal North Devon Championship Golf Course being the oldest English Links Course. Also the only place name in the world with an exclamation mark!
Northam village is a popular residential community with extensive facilities including Junior/Infants schooling just 2 miles from Bideford and en route to the seaside.
The villages of Instow and Appledore face each other across the mouth of the River Torridge both individually charming, the former being the home of the North Devon Yacht Club also with sandy beach and dunes whilst Appledore is famed for its Shipbuilding and Fishing heritage and is extremely popular for holidays and those enjoying its Olde Worlde charm with narrow cobbled streets, enhanced quayside, former Merchantmen’s houses and Fisherman’s cottages.
The rural hinterland is quite extensive and contains not only some of the most beautiful countryside in the land but also numerous lively villages, country pursuits and beauty spots such as the World renowned Cliffside village of Clovelly.
There are wide-ranging facilities and activities available throughout the area together with an excellent choice of state run and private educational facilities.
