  • Introduction

    Julie Gordon MNAEA - Director

My early career was quite varied beginning with working for a local authority in South Wales, where I dealt mainly with Right to Buy. I spent some years with British Airways working my way through to a position as Trainer before leaving to start a family. Over a period of time while my children were young, my roles varied from sales and admin to livery yard hand and even bridal makeup artistry! I took on prominent roles within voluntary groups, becoming the chairwoman of the large primary school PTA for some years before we left Berkshire. Like many people, we couldn't wait for an opportunity to move to the West Country and we did that in 2002, when we were lucky enough to acquire a building plot in the lovely village of Thorncombe (West Dorset) and carried out a "self-build", where we remain very happily. It was in 2003 that Estate Agency grabbed me and I realised that I had found my perfect role. I went quickly from part time to full time and began working for myself about 3 years later.

Gordon and Rumsby was born in January 2009 with my then business partner, Susan. Due to personal commitments, Susan stepped down from the business in 2010 but was happy for me to retain the name as we had started to become established even in that short space of time. In 2012, I opened the office in Colyton, moving to larger premises in 2014, from where we currently operate. My philosophy is do the best job I can for my client. We specialise in being considerate, fair, friendly and professional and are developing a strong reputation, which is why much of our business comes through recommendation.

My first experience in Estate Agency actually started when I was 11 years old. I used to help my father in his estate agents office, during the school holidays. On leaving school I joined full time and my position at that time was Telephone Sales, or 'Ring round girl' as they used to call us in those days.

My career progressed with a well established local independent estate agent, with promotions to Negotiator, Senior Negotiator and then to Manager/Branch Director, dealing with various aspects of the business, experiencing all kinds of markets, with finance and property shortages. The company subsequently sold out to the Halifax PLC in the late 80's and that was interesting having the bank's perspective into estate agency.
I decided to leave the madness of London and moved to Devon some 17 years ago to open and run a successful Bed & Breakfast business. However, it wasn't long before I was back to Estate Agency again. Very different to be selling individual properties in this outstanding and beautiful part of the country.

Meeting Julie through the business, once we took office premises in Colyton, I joined on a more permanent basis. Whilst I'm involved with the day to day running of the office, viewings etc., once we agree a sale on the property, I usually deal with the Sales progressing, liaising with the sellers, buyers and the solicitors. This can sometimes be extremely challenging, but oh so rewarding, when the keys are handed in, the seller moves on and the property that we have completed on, takes on a new chapter with the new owners.

My childhood was spent moving from house to house around the UK as my Dad was moved in his job from the South West to the North East via the Midlands and Scottish Borders. I always remember from a very early age that I loved going to view houses and thought moving house was a great adventure. So it's probably very fitting that I ended up in estate agency.

I started my working life in London in the design room of a fashion house and after ten years in the fashion industry, moved to Los Angeles with my husband who worked in film and TV. The house hunting process once again got me interested in California architecture and I decided to take the real estate exams and get my licence to work there. I had a fantastic time and stayed in California for 17 years when we decided to return to the UK for my daughter's education. We looked at 45 houses in three weeks and the property we finally decided on was shown to us by Julie Gordon. She was so helpful I decided I would keep in touch with her when we finally arrived in the area and one thing leading to another, I started working for her part-time shortly after she established the company, increasing my hours as she steadily built the company.

I love my job - we all muck in to do a variety of tasks that need to be done on a day to day basis including assisting Julie with taking on the new properties and getting them ready for the internet and producing the brochures and advertising. I enjoy engaging with buyers and attending viewings with them and helping them into a new home. There's nothing better than giving a first-time buyer the keys to their home.

I have always considered East Devon to be my home. I grew up in Bristol but as a child I would regularly visit my grandparents in Colyton and then once school was over I moved here on a permanent basis. It's a beautiful part of the world and the people here are kind, friendly and helpful - why would I want to live anywhere else?

Most of my adult life has been spent travelling the West Country working as a medical rep within the pharmaceutical industry. Then one day I had a "light bulb" moment when I finally realised I really didn't like what I was doing. I wanted to do something that really motivated and interested me so here I am working in estate agency. I have always had a very keen interest in property and over the years have bought and renovated several properties.  I am now very lucky to be working in a role that I feel truly passionate about and with the lovely people who brought me here in the first place.

Beyond the office my two main interests include singing and motorcycling. For the benefit of others I do most of my singing in private, whereas other people have said for the benefit of others I shouldn't be riding my bike!!

I'm the newest member of the Gordon & Rumsby team, joining in February 2017. Before moving back to "the shire", I was living in London and working as a professional makeup artist (2012 - 2016). I had some great jobs and experiences but after a while, I felt the countryside calling me back.
I moved back home and before I could say "cheers" I was working in a craft beer bar and learning tasting notes! It was just what I needed at the time and I can say I am now a craft beer convert - for better or for worse!  I've also dabbled in office and marketing work and have lots of customer service experience which stood me in good stead to join the G&R family and help out with the day to day running of things.

Giving an exceptional service is very important to me, which is one of the things that first drew me to Gordon & Rumsby. Julie and the team lead by a very strong example which I do my best to uphold on a daily basis. I have learnt a lot about property and the buying/selling process in this last couple of years thanks to their extensive knowledge and experience, which has been invaluable to me - having started as a complete novice! Outside of the office, in a nutshell: I love animals and wildlife and rambling through fields and across rivers with my other half, Robin. I am passionate about tea and I also sing in a funk/soul band called Smokey Jean & The Limes! I look forward to chatting with you and helping any way I can.

    Christine Gregson-Watkins - Saturday Office
If you call the office on a Saturday I will be picking up the phone and doing my best to help. I love working at Gordon and Rumsby because of the team and the customers. Joining in 2016 I have hardly missed a Saturday - suddenly all those years of watching Escape to the Country and Grand Designs linked in with a job! My working life began in "good old" Woolworths at 14, progressing to Sainsburys at 18. I taught history for two years before retraining to become an accountant. Working at Gordon and Rumsby was my first job after a career break, being a full time Mum to my beautiful children.
As a child I lived in Bristol and we had holidays in Bournmouth. My Dad then discovered West Bay when it was a sleepy seaside town with one fish and chip shop. From then on Dorset was our holiday haunt. It remained so when I "grew up" and then suddenly my husband's work brought my little family to Devon. It is a wonderful place to live with beautiful countryside and beaches.
Helping to finding the magic property that tugs at a person's heart strings is a great business to be in. Buying and selling houses are major life events and it's my aim to do all I can to make the experience as pleasant as possible for our customers.
