Wellington itself is a mid sized market town of approximately 14,000 people located 7 miles west of the county town of Taunton and just a few miles east of the Devon/Somerset border. The town is most notably famed for its obelisk style monument sited on the highest point of the Blackdown Hills to the south of the town. The monument was built in dedication to the town?s most famous patron Arthur Wellesley, or as he is more famously known, the Duke of Wellington. The memory of the Duke?s historic victory at the battle of Waterloo lives on within the town under such road names as Wellesley Park, Waterloo Road and Wellesley Terrace.
As with many similar sized market towns in the area, Wellington?s development and progression centred round its textiles factory, which was built and owned by the local Fox Brothers Company from the late 18th Century. As a result of the factory, Wellington saw a large amount of surrounding development to house the workforce and is largely responsible for the expansion of the town, especially during the Victorian and Edwardian periods. The company is still in business today, albeit in a scaled down version opposite the site of the original factory and with Dragons Den star Deborah Meaden currently the company?s majority shareholder.
These days Wellington is a thriving and ever growing centre of commerce with an excellent selection independent, locally owned shops and businesses including butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, a delicatessen, restaurants, health food shops, clothes shops, cafes and unique Art Deco furnished cinema. These local businesses combine with nationally recognisable brands including Waitrose, Co-Op, Asda, Boots, numerous ?high street banks' and WH Smith to offer a wide array of goods and services.
Wellington is often a popular choice for commuters to the surrounding larger towns and cities with excellent access to junction 26 of the M5. A regular shuttle bus service links the town with neighbouring Taunton, Tiverton, Exeter and beyond. Train stations are within easy reach with both Tiverton Parkway Station and Taunton Station within 8 miles of the town. There are also two airports that service the local area; Exeter International and Bristol International which are respectively 30 and 40 miles (approx) distant.
