Local Area

Bildeston dates back to around 1,100 years ago, with the first mention in the Domesday book and the village later becoming known for its woollen cloth industry. Buildings housing the weavers, dyers and clothiers formed the historic square in the centre of Bildeston, where today you'll find its famous Victorian clock tower.

Today, the small but well-established village features a range of amenities, from several boutique shops, a post office, a primary school and two pubs. The beautiful surrounding countryside is perfect for walks, while the nearby Hadleigh and Sudbury offer the larger supermarkets. A railway station just over 8 miles away in Needham Market connects you to Ipswich in 11 minutes and Cambridge in just over an hour and 10.

Just 5 miles away, a 10 minute drive, is the market town of Hadleigh, where you'll find a larger range of shops, cafes, pubs and lots of things to do. With historic buildings and guided country walks, as well as a weekly market and regular events such as a Jazz club, acoustic nights and family fun days, there's always something going on. A little further afield, is Sudbury, a slightly larger town, famous as the home of Thomas Gainsborough. Here's where you'll find the beautiful water meadows and the historic Quay Theatre with a variety of productions, as well as a range of pubs, shops and places to eat.

Less than 30 minutes from Bildeston by car is the coastal town of Ipswich with its buzzing, bustling waterfront lined with restaurants, bars and cafes, and also the location of one of the UK's newest universities, the University of Suffolk, opened in 2016. Ipswich has plenty to offer all visitors, with some 3.5 million people reported to have visited in 2016 alone, and being ranked in 2020 as an emerging global tourist destination by TripAdvisor. It's no surprise, with its galleries, theatres, and performance and arts festivals, including the annual Ipswich Jazz Festival, which also features art and photography exhibitions, film screenings and workshops held in venues across the town. In addition, there's the grandiose Ipswich Corn Exchange, showcasing an eclectic programme of comedy, music, sporting events, festivals and conferences.

Neither will visitors be disappointed with the Ipswich shopping experience, with all the major high street names available along the main street, plus the Buttermarket and Sailmakers Shopping Centres home to the big retail brands, Ipswich really does have something for everyone.
