Inside May’s quirkiest (and most haunted) homes

The haunted cage…

This former medieval prison is one of the most notoriously spooky and well-documented haunted cottages in the country.

Dating back to around the 16th century, The Cage in Essex is allegedly where 13 witches were held before being put on trial, which subsequently resulted in three hangings.

It was eventually converted into a residential building during the 1800’s, but the many strange occurrences since then have kept it in the headlines.

Subject of a Channel 4 docudrama True Horror ‘The Witches Prison’, paranormal experts have visited from all over the world, and there is a book entitled ‘Spirits of the Cage’ about the events experienced by the current owner.

The cottage itself comprises three reception rooms, a kitchen, a ground floor cloakroom, plus two bedrooms and a bathroom on the split level first floor.

The house has now been cleared of the many ‘evil residents’ encountered over the years: a vision of a satanic-looking goat, growling moving shadows, violent rattles, drops in temperature, and visions of ghostly figures quite often trying to push the living down the steep staircase. All of this seems to have gone; it is apparently still haunted but there seems to be a newly found harmony within.

The current owner Vanessa Mitchell purchased The Cage in 2004, albeit living very briefly herself in the property due to the high level of paranormal activity.

Rightmove’s property expert Miles Shipside said: “The superstitious among you will probably think twice about even setting foot in the property, let alone wanting to live there. The building certainly has a unique atmosphere about it, but I’ll leave it for others to decide whether this is because of paranormal activity or not. The property itself is a charming cottage in a quintessential English village, so if home hunters can get past the hullabaloo surrounding its chequered past, I’m sure it would make a very cosy home for someone.”

One of Britain’s youngest castles…

You’d be mistaken for thinking that this impressive, medieval-looking castle has stood as a fortress for centuries – but in fact it’s not even turned 30-years-old.

This marvellously grandiose Grade II-listed home, on the market for £1.5 million, is actually a four-bedroom property in one of Torquay’s most sought-after postcodes, which was built in 1992.

Lincombe Keep was designed to encapsulate the amazing vista over Ilsham Valley and the surrounding area and out to sea. To all intents and purposes, it is a modern castle, and even boasts a fully electric portcullis which leads visitors to a split-level reception hallway. Imagine kicking off a dinner party like that!

The property has won several awards for its individuality and was designed by John Pritchard Architects.

The grounds were originally designed by Fred Harrild who was based in Totnes and was believed to be a former pupil of iconic architect Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Rightmove’s property expert Miles Shipside said: “This astounding property really is fit for a king and I can’t quite believe that it’s younger than I am! Rightmove is home to such a wide variety of properties, from castle-inspired homes like this one to modern, city penthouses and it’s always a pleasure to take a sneak peek around some of the country’s quirkiest properties. This Torquay home is breath-taking and wouldn’t look out of place on a Game of Thrones film set.”

Life’s a beach…

Escape from the rat race at this ultra-modern house which is tucked away on a shingle beach once reported to be the country’s only desert.

Pobble House in Kent, a three-bedroom architectural masterpiece, is up for sale for £525,000 and is a unique coastal retreat which has scooped a number of awards for its stunning design.

The property has been designed so that it appears to float lightly above the shingle, cast in a simple palette of industrial materials including timber cladding, cement board and corten steel.

Inside, the living space is arranged over a single level, with a wonderful open-plan reception room assembled around a wood-burning stove that is flanked by two corner windows and views across the shingle landscape.

Rightmove’s property expert Miles Shipside said: “This is such a beautifully unique property and has a certain Grand Designs feel to it. I love how the home seems to hover in the eerie landscape and fits in incredibly well with the surrounding environment. It’s not everyday that Rightmove has a listing in a desert, but this stunning property is sure to get snapped up fast.”

This property is listed for sale with The Modern House.
