#InspirationWednesday – Whitby
This week, to celebrate Halloween, our #InspirationWednesday location is one which inspired Bram Stoker’s novel ‘Dracula’!
Situated on the Yorkshire Coast, Whitby sits above Scarborough and is within easy reach of the historic city of York, further inland. With a coastline brimming with wildlife (particularly puffins) and plenty of historic sites, such as the 13th century Whitby Abbey and Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby is a relaxed and beautiful location to live.
With boat trips from Whitby harbour and freshly caught fish and chips, this area is perfect for those looking to escape the faster pace of life of the city and enjoy the fresh sea air and tranquillity this coast has to offer.
5 facts about Whitby
1. Whitby offers a ‘Dracula Tour’ to educate visitors about the significance of the seaside town, and the Abbey, on the novel.
2. Twice a year there is a ‘Whitby Gothic Weekend’ in the town, which started in 1994. The town even has a dedicated goth hotel!
3. Captain Cook’s boat, The Endeavor, was built in Whitby.
4. Whitby Abbey was built in AD655. Its history includes being destroyed in Viking Raids, being dissolved by Henry VIII and damaged in WW1.
5. There is a whale jaw bone arch in the town, leaving evidence of the harbour’s interesting history – the harbour was once the location from which whaling trips to Greenland left.
