The interior design trends making waves
Autumn signals the ‘new year’ for interior designers as the major design weeks in London and Paris take place. They’re the most important dates in the industry calendar and where creatives from around the world find their inspiration.
Attending the most influential exhibitions in both cities was Redrow’s interior design manager Emma Brindley. We caught up with Emma for an insider debrief to bring you the most exciting emerging trends and her advice on how to introduce them into your own home.
‘The good life’
The major theme at the Maison et Objet fayre in Paris was the ‘Comfort Zone’. In essence it’s about making your home a place for rest and tranquillity; somewhere to live ‘the good life’. Not a trend of its own per se but it sets the tone for all of the new interior looks emerging for next year. Create a luxurious take on comfort by combining beautiful materials and unique shapes to encourage a sense of calmness and peace of mind.
Calming colours
Dulux revealed its colour of the year for 2018 as ‘Heart Wood’, a calming hue that sits between a dusky mauve and a smoky taupe and creates a wonderful feeling of warmth. Accompanied by toned down pastels or even darker pralines, you can add depth and personality to your room. This soft colour palette has completely replaced the grey shades that have dominated home interiors in previous years and works well as a feature wall or can be introduced through fabrics and accessories.
Providing a contrast to this softness are the deeper jewel colours. First seen at the beginning of 2017, dramatic inky blues and emerald greens can strike a rich and luxurious note in any room. Bursts of jewel tones are perfect for feature chair fabrics or combine with coal black in ceramic accessories.
Metallics
For 2018, the focus is on gold and warm bronzed metallics. Combining gold with soft browns and delicate greens can add a richness to your home’s interior. A great way to introduce metallics is through lighting. Consider a feature pendant encased by dull or tarnished gold.
Natural inspiration
Nature will continue to strengthen its roots as a key trend for next year, underpinning the importance of wellbeing in the home, with darker kale tones in plants and accessories.
Weaving is also going to be huge in 2018. Choose statement pieces such as baskets, trays and bags in a variety of patterns and colours.
Stone remains popular while concrete will also be prominent within accessories; particularly candle holders and plant pots.
Statement furniture
When it comes to furniture looks for 2018, the emphasis will be on timeless refined pieces with simplistic features, while oozing style.
Modern opulence is the key fabric trend, with muted shades of praline and dusted gold contrasting with dark wenge wood work and tarnished metallic finishes.
Infused with elegance and luxury, statement pieces in black finishes will be a dominant trend and can be best introduced in your home through oversized coffee tables and chairs.
