All aboard the bungalow time machine

This three-bedroom bungalow has a hidden secret inside the front door and you’ll be forgiven for thinking you’d walked into a time machine once you see it.

That’s because the hallway of this unassuming West Sussex property is lined with two lovingly restored Midland Railway carriages believed to date back to the Victorian era.

It is thought that the two blood red carriages, which dominate the spine of this detached bungalow, were first in use towards the end of the 19th century, around 1885.

There is still an abundance of detail on both carriages and walking down the hallway gives the impression of striding down a platform ready to catch a ride on the Orient Express.

The bungalow stretches to more than 1200 sq ft and beautifully blends modern comforts with Victorian luxury.

The overall plot exceeds 600 m² and offers a gated driveway leading to a double garage, while inside there are three bedrooms, two reception rooms, a kitchen, bathroom and utility area.

Rightmove property expert Miles Shipside said: “I’ve seen houseboats and I’ve seen properties with helipads and runways, but I think this is the first time I’ve seen a house refurbished with actual train carriages.

“It really does look quite amazing and genuinely evokes a sense of walking back through time. This has to be one of the most creative and novel renovations I’ve ever come across.”

The remote island home with no neighbours

This stunningly impressive coastal manor is Hollywood-esque and is surrounded by a landscape that is strikingly similar to something from Lord of the Rings.

Leim Farm is located on the Isle of Gigha, which is the most southerly of the Inner Hebrides, and is accessed by a passenger and 12-car ferry service from the mainland.

The island itself is a magical place – littered with glittering white sandy beaches and several extreme rock faces full of intriguing nooks and crannies.

You are also unlikely to encounter nosey neighbours at this place, what with the island – which is community-owned after a buy-out in 2002 – boasting a population of around 160 people.

There is plenty to keep you entertained once you shut yourself away from the outside world, however.

The property has an indoor games room, cinema room and jacuzzi for when the weather is too much to battle, while outdoors, there are unspoilt beaches, a golf course and various water sport activities to enjoy.

Rightmove property expert Miles Shipside said: “If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life I can’t think of many better places to do so than this beautifully isolated home.

“You could spend hours just taking in the scenery from your bedroom window. This is a brilliantly charming property and with miles of green space to explore, there’ll be no excuse not to stay fit.”

This property is listed for sale with Strutt & Parker.

Step inside an award-winning architectural masterpiece

An incredible dome-shaped house that looks like an English version of an Igloo could be yours for a cool £1 million.

The eye-catching four-bedroom property was built in 1986 by award-winning architects David Richmond Associates and has since been affectionally dubbed The Dome.

Following the Geodesic dome structure, the futuristic looking house in Tatsfield, Surrey received acclaim from the architectural world, national press and television.

The property sits centrally in its own grounds of approximately half an acre with a double garage, currently being used as a studio, and outdoor swimming pool.

The atrium ceiling dominates the living area, which is flooded with lots of natural light from the triangular roof windows and is overlooked by the minstrel’s gallery on the first floor.

This spacious area is open plan to both the dining room, with French door leading to a side terrace, and a kitchen/breakfast room.

The property is tucked away in a quaint village where most of the houses are traditional 1930s homes, but presumably still receives a lot of attention.

Rightmove property expert Miles Shipside said: “The design is instantly impressive, and I love how the property looks like it belongs where it is, despite the fact it wouldn’t look out of place in Alaska.

“The property has a certain ski chalet feel to it, but it’s also very modern and charming. Fans of the gameshow The Crystal Maze may certainly take a shine to this house.”

This property is listed for sale with Fine & Country.
