Property Wisdom – Be a Mover not a Shaker

moving dayDon’t make a meal out of moving – plan it like a military operation and keep the tea, biscuits and bubble wrap flowing, says property expert Laura Henderson.

Removal firms come in all shapes and sizes from the family-run firm to the large multi-national, not to mention the growing band of specialist removal companies equipped to shift everything from priceless pianos to fine-bone family heirlooms. So how do you move without having a meltdown?

Check with the National Guild of Approved Removers and Storers – accredited firms will send a copy of their R.O.A.R.S report, (which confirms that they are registered with the Guild), with every quotation they offer. Always get more than one quote (prices can vary widely) and check a minimum of three references.

Friday’s the most popular moving day, with the best removal firms booked up well in advance. Plump for an ‘off-peak’ slot during the week and you stand a better chance of getting your first choice of firm and a little something knocked off the price.

Even the best companies break things, so make sure you understand the level of protection provided (particularly for higher value items) and the process involved in the event of a claim. Don’t forget to check if your own household insurance covers you for damage or loss in a move.

Don’t chop and change your removal needs on the day – your removal firm is there to place items in the rooms you designate not to feng-shui your new home, so decide in advance where you want things put and stick to the plan. Pre-empt any move-in ‘challenges’ e.g. small doorframes, narrow stairwells, restricted parking etc, by doing a rekky and let the company know well in advance.
