20 years of removals

ClockworkAt Clockwork Removals and Storage we are fast approaching our 20th anniversary on June 27th 2016, so we thought we would journey back to the start and reflect on some of our favourite memories.

Clockwork was founded by Chairman Courtenay Morison in Edinburgh during the summer of 1996 on the belief that customers deserve moving solutions that are tailored around the needs of a modern lifestyle, and with the intention of building a nationwide business with a strong brand and potential for growth. Clockwork is now a fully accredited removals and storage company with 12 branches throughout the UK, over 250 employees and a fleet of more than 80 vehicles. Through both natural growth and acquisitions the company has grown to become one of the UK’s top 10 movers.

Clockwork has had the pleasure of providing removal and storage services to a wide variety of people over the years, including (but not limited to) Premier League Footballers, Rugby Players, Ambassadors, Olympic Athletes, Illusionists, Fashion Icons and even the Royal Household!

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, our team in Oxford encountered a life size fibreglass horse, which turned out to be …a lamp! Nevertheless, they were unfazed and were able to move and store the item securely in containerised storage.

As you can imagine, providing removal services on a local, national and international scale, our team comes across obstacles from time to time, but it’s how we respond that sets us apart. One of our favourite anecdotes comes from a move to France, where the Crew were unable to get the large van anywhere near the house due to its very rural location. The customer let the Clockwork team use their Citroen 2cv6 (a quintessential French car – if you haven’t seen one, you really should look it up), who then proceeded to use it to transport the entire contents of the van to the house; a slightly unorthodox method, but it got the job done!

Our London team are always up for a challenge, from moving boathouses on the Thames to huge apartments on London’s Baker Street; having to contend with large volumes of red route traffic and a bus lane. That said, carrying curious items from an illusionist’s collection such as skulls, skeletons and stuffed giraffes down the street, inadvertently acts as a traffic calming measure, as people slow down to see what the Crew are carrying to the van.

If you are a shopaholic looking to move house and your wardrobes are bursting at the seams, then rest assured, Clockwork can handle it. The London team have moved fashion royalty from London to New York – and they don’t travel light! On one occasion, the fashionista in question had an entire 40 foot container dedicated completely to clothes and shoes, with about 200 boxes of shoes taking up half of the container and hanging clothes taking up the remaining half. The volume of hanging clothes was equivalent to the entire volume of a full 2 bedroom property! This particular story is often shared with some of our female customers who get slightly embarrassed when showing our Surveyors how many clothes they have. Needless to say, in comparison to a 40 foot container full of clothes, their shopping habits suddenly seemed inconsequential.

Whether you like to move around to experience life in different parts of the UK or abroad, or are relocating for work, Clockwork are thankful for repeat customers. More recently, the team helped move a footballer and his heavily pregnant wife who were drawn in by the allure of the leafy suburbs. However, it wasn’t all serenity and swing sets, as the Manager was then fired at the end of the season and his replacement’s first act in charge was to put a considerable number of players on the transfer list –our customer included!

We are glad to have shared with you some of these stories as Clockwork Removals and Storage celebrates its 20 year history.  Clockwork has come a long way over the decades and we would like to thank all of our customers, both past and present, for being a part of it. Here’s to the next 20!
