Would you pay more for a wildlife friendly garden?

What would make you pay more for your dream house? For some people it’s a killer kitchen, for others it’s stunning views. But what about a garden that’s designed to give nature a home?

A recent survey by Rightmove and the RSPB has revealed that seven out of 10 people in the UK would consider paying more for a property that has a wildlife-friendly garden. In answer to the question ‘would you pay more for a house with a wildlife friendly garden?’ 14% of people surveyed answered ‘yes, definitely’, another 14% answered ‘probably’ and 39% said ‘maybe’.

People in Northern Ireland were most likely to pay more for a wildlife-friendly property with almost half of people surveyed (46%) answering ‘yes, definitely’ or ‘probably’.  However, only 7% of those in Wales think a wildlife-friendly garden is important enough to consider definitely paying more.

So if giving nature a home in your garden is good for our flapping, fluttering, buzzing, burrowing, snuffling and slithering neighbours, and the majority of people would consider paying more for a house with a wildlife friendly garden – what are you waiting for? No matter how big or small your outside space, there’s something you can do to make a difference.

We all know there is a housing crisis in the UK. Perhaps less well-known, however, is that there is an equally urgent housing crisis facing much of the UK’s threatened wildlife.

The worrying state of things for creatures that call our gardens ‘home’ has encouraged Rightmove to lend our support to the RSPB’s new Giving Nature a Home campaign. The objective is simple: to encourage people across the UK to create a million new homes for nature in their gardens and outdoor spaces.
