Casa Giacomo is an elegant, frescoed, apartment for partial restoration in the heart of the historic centre of Fontechiari, a few steps from the main Church of San Giovanni.

The apartment looks out two ways, over the heart of the old town and over the valley.

The large main salon has a painted ceiling, and a fine marble fireplace, as well as antique tiles. On the valley side, French doors open onto a balcony, which is also accessible from the kitchen.

The kitchen, the most recently updated part of the apartment (which continued to be used for entertainment even when it was no longer lived in), has a window overlooking the valley as well as an unusual walk-in pantry cut into the old walls of the building. This opens out onto the balcony.

Also opening from the main salon are a bedroom (currently set up as a study) with ensuite bathroom, and a study/more casual living room, from which you reach the second bedroom, which currently has an ensuite w.c., but which could have a full bathroom created. These two rooms look out on the old town, towards the church square.

Located on the top (3rd) floor of an important and historic building from the 1800s, the apartment has a modern kitchen, but would benefit from new bathrooms, redecoration and general modernisation.

The building in which the apartment is located is one of the most important historic buildings of Fontechiari, and includes two other apartments, owned by the same family, and also for sale. One is a ground floor apartment with bedroom, bathroom and large living room with galley kitchen (suitable as guest or staff accomodation); the other is on the first floor and is an elegant, fully restored three bedroom apartment.

THE CIOCIARIA

Casale Fontechiari is in the area of Italy called the Ciociaria, the name given to the fertile land that lies south of Rome but north of Naples, situated inland in the hills in the heart of Italy.

The Ciociaria region is within easy reach of both Rome and Naples and their respective airports. A day's shopping in Rome is a common pastime, while an even shorter drive brings you to the charming beaches south of Rome. Alternatively, drive east, and the mountains of the Abruzzo National Park await with horse trekking in the magnificent beech forests, and sparkling mountain lakes and rivers where you can swim in the heat of the summer. And at the other extreme of temperature, although the towns of the Ciocaria are temperate, less than an hour's drive brings you to the winter ski slopes.

Often overlooked, both by tourists and by those foreigners in search of an Italian home, in favour of the more publicized regions of Tuscany and Umbria, the Ciociaria remains largely an unspoilt gem with beautiful scenery and medieval hilltop towns.
