VILLAGE OF SADINA

The village of Sadina is situated in Northeastern Bulgaria, in the Municipality of Popovo, District of Targovishte. The picturesque village is hidden in a hollow between the cities of Razgrad and Ruse, along the Malki Lom River.

Great location - surrounded by the Town of Popovo - approximately 12 miles from the village, Town of Targovishe - located only 36 miles away, the biggest city in the area City of Ruse - also only 36 miles away, the City of Veliko Tarnovo - 57 miles, the coastal City of Varna - 100 miles, the Bulgarian capital Sofia - 194 miles.

In the village you can also find a Village Hall, a post office, shops, a community centre "Saedinenie", established in 1889 with functioning folklore ensembles, a stadium, a primary school, as well as the "Holy Trinity" Church built in 1868.

About 900 people live in Sadina and it is one of the few villages in Bulgaria inhabited by the oldest ethnographic group in Bulgaria - namely the Kapantsi. They are famous for having preserved their original traditions representing their rich past and the village is home to the Kapanski Ethnographic Museum Complex. In the complex, situated in the centre of the village of Sadina, there is a house with ethnographic exhibition, providing an opportunity to study the customs and traditions of the Kapantsi. In the yard there is an open stage, barbecue, well, traditional stone fountain, covered space in the old style type of shelter, equipped with wooden tables and benches. Here you can try traditional local dishes and also enjoy folklore events.

The Roman fortress "Dobroselsko Kale" also known as "The Stone Road Fortress" is located about 3.5 km west of Sadina on a small natural mound-like rise located at the edge of the village grounds, hidden in a small valley. An old Roman road probably passed by it in the past.

MUNICIPALITY OF POPOVO

Municipality of Popovo is situated in the Northeastern part of the Republic of Bulgaria in the District of Targovishte. Bordering is the municipalities of Targovishte, Antonovo, Strazhitsa, Byala, Dve Mogili, Opaka, Tsar Kaloyan, Razgrad and Loznitsa.

In the administrative-territorial boundaries of the municipality are included 35 settlements, of which 34 villages and only the administrative center Popovo is a town.

The population of the municipality is about 33 213 people.

In the last few years, development and tourism have been made, using the favorable location of the town to other larger settlements, the natural assets of the region and its cultural wealth.

Various projects won by the municipality administration and by non-governmental organizations are being repaired in the central part of the city and its neighborhoods, water supply, sewerage, streets, municipal buildings (schools, chitalishte, community centers) and its public works in general Popovo to become a more attractive place for life and business.

The roads serving the settlements in the municipality are from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. There is a regular bus transport linking the settlements with other larger cities. The central railway line Sofia - Varna passes through the territory of the municipality.

The settlements on the territory of the Municipality of Popovo are supplied with drinking water. The electricity supply to the Municipality of Popovo is implemented by the electricity system of the Republic of Bulgaria.

There are 6 full-day kindergartens, 10 elementary schools, 3 high schools, two of which are professional and 33 community centers.

Cultural and natural landmarks in the municipality are:

- Orthodox Church of St. Archangel Michael in Popovo - an almost Revival complex consisting of a neat white church with beautiful frescoes, a bell tower, a stone fence and a quiet courtyard with vineyards, a fountain, flowers and memorial tablets, and the tombs of priests;

- The Late Roman fortress and the town of Kovachevsko Kale - it is located about 4 miles west of the center of Popovo, in close proximity to the modern road Popovo - Byala;

- Traditional architectural and ethnographic complex - tourists are acquainted with the trap culture, try the local dishes and participate in the typical for this region crafts. Here tourists have the opportunity to choose between three routes, including visits to archaeological, historical and cultural sites;

- 12 miles south of Popovo, along the beautiful and picturesque valley near the Bouwuk Dere (Big River), an 8-mile eco-path is built. The eco-trail is situated between the villages of Ivancha and Dolets. This is one of the most beautiful places for the beauty connoisseurs and nature lovers, situated on the natural border between the Balkan and the Danube Plain;

- "Kavatsite" Dam - located in the vicinity of the town of Popovo. A very suitable place for relaxation coupled with sport fishing with tickets;

- The Kakalov hill - the highest part of the Popov Heights (488 m). It is located between the villages of Kovachevets, Palamatsa, Golyamo Gradishte and Tsar Assen. There is the third highest point in the Danube Plain;

- The historic Kerchana hill near the village of Aprilovo - only 1 mile north of the village of Aprilovo and about 6 miles south of the center of Popovo rises the forest, bearing the name Kerchana or "Kerikan bair";

- On the territory of the Municipality of Popovo is located the healing holy spring with a chapel in the village of Zvezda.


DISTRICT OF TARGOVISHTE

District of Targovishte consists of 5 municipalities - Targovishte, Popovo, Omurtag, Opaka and Antonovo. It borders with 5 districts - Ruse, Razgrad, Veliko Tarnovo, Shumen and Sliven.

The settlements in the District of Targovishte have a total of 194, and the population is approximately 120 818 people.

The area is served by I-4, which is a path of prime importance. Secondary roads are used for intra-regional routes.

The town of Targovishte is the administrative center of the Municipality and the District of Targovishte.

The most interesting cultural and natural landmarks in the area are:

- Regional Historical Museum - Targovishte, established in 1959 - the museum has two permanent expositions - archaeological and ethnographic, house museum of Nikola Simov (Kuruto), and two emblematic buildings - the Sveshtarov house and the Slaveikov school. In the halls of the Slaveikov School, various thematic and mobile exhibitions are periodically opened. The museum enjoys increased interest from young audiences as well as active cooperation with local schools;

- Hadji Angelova House - Museum in Targovishte. Hadji Angelova House is an exceptional architectural and historical monument located in the City of Targovishte. The house dates back to 1863 and is owned by the Bulgarian merchant Hadji Angel Drumev. This landmark is a typical house in the revival style, decorated with wood carvings. Today the house functions as a museum. The exhibits there are part of the furniture and household items of the rich merchant - beautiful furniture, carpets, paintings, expensive things, etc. It can be considered tools used in viticulture, pottery and agriculture.

- Drama Theater - Targovishte - State Theater, founded in 1969. It creates its own production and accepts guest houses;

- The local regional library "Petar Stapov" is located in the City of Targovishte;

- Borovo Eye Lake - is located in the park of the same name in the southwestern part of Targovishte. Water lilies can be seen by the lake's lane, and in summer water and fish are placed in the waters. In the park around the lake there are alleys for walks, benches for recreation and restaurant;

- Waterfall in the locality of Boaza (4 miles from Targovishte) - the waterfall is located in the Boaza area, next to the main road Varna-Sofia. It is formed by an underground stream of the Vrana River, which is on the rock surface and is about 5 meters high;

- Aviation Park in Omurtag - located right at the entrance of the city. The idea for the construction of outdoor exposure is the second Bulgarian cosmonaut - Alexander Alexandrov. There are three airplanes in the aviation fleet with which Alexandrov flew, a rocket launcher and aviation equipment. The complex is extremely attractive for both small and large visitors;

- Near the City of Targovishte, at the foot of the Preslav mountain, there are the ruins of a large town, which arose in the Late Roman period (18th-18th centuries). Misionis, also known as Krumovo Kale, was situated on a hill above the river, in the Boaza Pass. Today it is declared part of our cultural heritage and is included in the list of Hundred National Tourist Sites;

- The Rock Monastery in Krepcha - there is the oldest inscription of Cyrillic in Bulgaria.
