Lefkimmi
Lefkimmi is the largest town and the center of the southern part of Corfu. It is directly connected by ferry routes from its port to Igoumenitsa and Paxos, serving both residents and visitors. Lefkimmi is a picturesque town built on flat land, surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, with the Lefkimmi River flowing through it and emptying into the nearby Bouka beach.

The area of Lefkimmi has been known since antiquity, as it was here that the famous naval battle between the Corinthians and the Athenians took place during the Peloponnesian War. In the Middle Ages its name was Alechimmo, from which today the alternative place name Alevki is preserved.

The town of Lefkimmi has not been developed for tourism and retains all its traditional character. Don't be surprised if you see women on its streets carrying jars balanced on their heads. In Lefkimmi you will also find several historic monasteries and churches, such as the Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels (1698), built by the sons of Kapodistrias. In the church of Saint Arsenios, the relics of the Saint - who for centuries was the protector of Corfu - are kept in a reliquary.

A walk through the neighborhoods of Lefkimmi reveals many traces of its long history. In Rigglades you will see many old manor houses. This settlement dates back to Byzantine times and took its name from the Rigglis family who lived there. Also located there are the Lefkimmi Salt Pans, which produced salt for centuries. The restored Venetian buildings you will see were once used as salt warehouses. In Melikia, a 15th-century village, it is worth visiting the church of Saint Isavros, with rare 16th-century frescoes. A stroll through the settlement of Potami is also a must, with its little bridge over the Lefkimmi River, beneath which locals moor their fishing boats.

Lefkimmi preserves a strong musical and artistic tradition. The Lefkimmi Musical and Artistic Association was founded in 1910 and today numbers over 100 musicians. The Lefkimmi Philharmonic, the local choir, and the Municipal Conservatory also contribute to the musical education of the people of Lefkimmi.
