The flat is situated in one of Oxford's iconic buildings, a redbrick Victorian 'folly' fitted out with crenellations and classical statuary. Known as 'Caudwells Castle' or 'Folly Bridge Tower', it was built in 1849 by Joseph Caudwell, a local eccentric who had more than one brush with the law. More recent inhabitants include one of the founders of the Oxford History of Science Museum, Robert W.T. Gunther, whose family lived there in the early 20th century. In the medieval period, the site of the building was occupied by a hexagonal defensive tower which formed the southern gate of the city, and in which lived the Franciscan friar and philosopher Roger Bacon (1214-1292). The bridge over the Thames dates to the 11th century and lies atop the original 'oxnaforda', literally a ford across which oxen could be safely driven, that gave the city of Oxford its name. Across the bridge from the flat lies the pier from which Lewis Carroll set forth by boat with Alice and the other Liddell children, telling them along the way the stories eventually published as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
