VILLAGE OF BABOVO

Babovo is a village in Northeast Bulgaria. It is located in Municipality of Slivo Pole, District of Ruse. It is 6 miles from the Town of Slivo Pole, 15 miles from the Town of Marten, and 20 miles from the City of Ruse.

The village is located 55 miles from the other larger city around - Silistra. Also, the Village of Babovo is 109 miles away from the City of Dobrich and 127 miles from the sea and the City of Varna.

The village of Babovo is only 2 miles away from the banks of the Danube River, on a high plateau, that protects the village from the spring floods of the river.

The population is approximately 459 people.

In the village of Babovo, there is a town hall, a post office, a community center, a restaurant, shops, and recreation area with a playground.

There is regular bus transport to and from the nearby villages and cities.

The local legend about the history of the village tells that it originated from an inn located on the road. The inn was owned by a grandmother ("baba"in Bulgarian) who was a very good housewife and cook. Over the years, people began to settle around the inn and hence the name of the village Babovo.

The village was renovated in the 1950s. At that time the population was over a thousand people, but it was gradually decreasing. Interest in the village is revived because of the quietness and beautiful nature. In 2006 repair works were undertaken in order to improve the infrastructure of the village.

Tourism and natural landmarks:

- The Orthodox Church "Holy Trinity" - in the village;

- The "Kalimok-Brashlen" Nature Park - Since 2005, a project has been launched to restore the swamps around the village. The place has been declared a Kalimok Nature Park and covers a large area around the villages of Babovo, Brashlen, Golyamo Vranovo and Ryahovo in the Municipality of Slivo Pole, and the town of Tutrakan and the villages of Nova Cherna, Staro Selo and Tsar Samuil in the Municipality of Tutrakan. In Kalimok-Brashlen the flora is represented by 109 species of algae, 10 species of mosses, 16 species of fungi, over 300 higher plants, over 240 species of birds. In the protected area there can be found marsh snowdrop, which is in the red book of plant species;

- An ancient Thracian tomb has been discovered on the land of the village in the "Kalimok-Brashlen" Nature Park;

- The picturesque banks of the Danube River provide great opportunities for recreation, hunting, and fishing.


MUNICIPALITY OF SLIVO POLE


The Municipality of Slivo Pole is located in Northeast Bulgaria and is one of the constituent municipalities of District of Ruse.

The settlement network of the municipality covers 11 villages: the villages of Babovo, Borisovo, Brashlen, Golyamo Vranovo, Kosharna, Malko Vranovo, Ryahovo, Stambolovo, Cherechovo, Yudelnik and the administrative center - Slivo Pole. It is located 15 miles away from the City of Ruse.

The population in the municipality is about 11 706 people.

There are 3 schools on the territory of the municipality, which are located in the Town of Slivo Pole, the Village of Ryahovo and in the Village of Golyamo Vranovo.

In all villages in the municipality, except the villages of Babovo, Brashlen and Chereshovo, there is a kindergarten.

The main road II-21 passes through the municipality, connecting the cities of Ruse and Silistra.

The good geographical location, as well as the developed transport infrastructure make Municipality of Slivo Pole an attractive and promising place for investments.

The largest biofuel factory in the Balkans is located in the town of Slivo Pole.

Tourism and natural landmarks:

The territory of the municipality includes part of the largest protected area in Bulgaria - "Kalimok-Brashlen Protected Area". The "Kalimok-Brashlen Protected Area" is located on the banks of the Danube River, between the cities of Ruse and Silistra. It also includes several Danube islands. It has been declared a protected area in order to protect one of the few remaining Danube wetlands and its biological world. Important and rare plants grow on the territory of Kalimok-Brashlen, as well as several very important bird species nest. The area is suitable for ecotourism.

Aleko Island - along the Danube River. It ranks 7th in size among the Bulgarian islands. It is 200-300 meters from the Bulgarian coast near the Danube lowland Coast and 2 miles north of the Town of Slivo Pole. The island resembles a long tongue with a length of 4.6 miles and a maximum width of 0.4 miles. It is formed by river sediments with alluvial soils, overgrown mainly with poplar. The eastern part of the island falls in the protected area "Aleko-Telika".

Lipnik Forest Park is located near the Village of Nikolovo, Municipality of Ruse. It is located in a huge forest of linden trees, hence its name. It is the largest forest park in Bulgaria.


DISTRICT OF RUSE

Ruse is the biggest Bulgarian river port on the Danube River, serving an important part of the international trade of the country. Danube Bridge, also known as the Ruse-Giurgiu Friendship Bridge, which until 14 June 2013 the only one in the shared Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube, crosses the river here.

The city is known for its 19th- and 20th-century Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo architecture, which attracts many tourists, and for which it is often called the "Little Vienna". There are over 260 buildings, monuments of culture and dozens of sites with the "European Cultural Heritage" sign, which were built as a result of the enterprising and European spirit of the people of Ruse, who at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century attracted prominent European architects and builders for the construction of an urban architectural environment that is one-of-a-kind in Bulgaria.

Ruse occupies a significant place in the Bulgarian national history and has a rich cultural-historical heritage - a potential needed for the development of cultural tourism. As a settlement, Ruse has a very rich, millennial history.

Ruse is home to many museums, telling about the legacy of the long historical existence of the city and the region: Regional History Museum - Ruse with open-air expositions - Sexaginta Prista and the Medieval City of Cherven, Pantheon of the National Revival Heroes, Museum of Urban Life, House-Museum "Baba Tonka" and House-Museum "Zahari Stoyanov", Ecomuseum with aquarium, etc.

There are a variety of attractive recreation areas on the territory of Ruse Municipality. Forest Park "Lipnik" near the village of Nikolovo is a popular place for rest and recreation on weekends among the locals. There is a lake and facilities for fishing, boating, outdoor sports and picnicking. 20 km from Ruse is situated "Rusenski Lom" Nature Park.

Along the Danube runs one of the 15 bicycle corridors that connect bicycle tourism enthusiasts in Europe - EuroVelo 6.

The Nature around the city of Ruse

** Natural Park "Rusenski Lom" - The Rusenski Lom River Valley, along with its tributaries Beli (White), Malki (Little) and Cherni (Black) Lom represents a unique world in itself in which the amazing nature is entwined into out remote past history. Part of the valley was proclaimed a Natural Park. The park is located at about 20 km to the south-west from Ruse. It was created in 1970 with the purpose of preserving the canyons of the three rivers, their flora, fauna and historical landmarks. The rivers have created incredibly beautiful gorges into the limestone rock foundation. It is genuine joy for the eyes and real paradise for rock climbers.

** Natural landmark "Orlova Chuka" Cave - located on the left shore of the Cherni Lom river. It's the 2nd longest cave in Bulgaria (13 438 m in length), representing a complex labyrinth of interweaving galleries, tunnels, abysses, big and small halls.

** Lipnik Forest Park: the park is a big site for recreation, sports, tourism, sunbathing and all other kinds of entertainment, situated at the distance of 12 km east of Ruse. There are country houses, restaurants, artificial lakes, a hotel, a zoo corner, a sports base and a camping site. Its serenity and fresh air attract citizens & foreigners. This is a wonderful place for fishing, water sports, walking and just enjoying the day.

The villages in the region are capturing the tourists with the picturesque nature, the rock landscape and the breath-taking views and the plenty of opportunities for hiking, riding and biking experiences. The surrounding area offers different ways to spend your free time and to enjoy the beauty of the region.

The closest ski resort to Ruse is in "Uzana", the geographic center of Bulgaria, located at about 28 miles from Veliko Tarnovo. There are several hotels in the resort which provide tourism opportunities and good conditions for relaxation among the quiet and calm atmosphere of the mountain throughout the year. The surrounding sites of Uzana are suitable for spaleology and rock climbing. There are possibilities for cultural tourism in the region. In the nearby open-air "Ethnographic Museum Etara" people can learn more about Bulgarian crafts. The "Sokolski Monastery" is situated a few miles away from Uzana.
