An historic, mid-terrace, Grade-II listed, stone-built cottage, Gatehouse Cottage is accessed beneath the gothic archway of Cartmel Priory Gatehouse. Dating back to 1188, this archway is all that remains of the original Augustinian Priory.
Formerly an antique shop and latterly an artist's gallery, its ancestry can be easily spied in the cottage windows and deep framed doorway which leads into the main living area.
A log-burning stove sits within an understated fireplace, with original meat hooks in the whitewashed ceiling overhead perfectly in keeping with the cottage's 12th-century origins. New shutters to two windows provide privacy from the quiet street to the front, whilst electric radiators also infuse a touch of 21st-century warmth.
Enjoy cosy nights in by the fire in the lounge area to the left, with ample space for a dining table to the right. Redecorated and refurbished throughout, make your way to the well-equipped kitchen, where inky blue cabinets with brass handles provide a plethora of storage. Marble-style countertops offer preparation space, whilst integrated appliances include a stainless-steel sink, AEG oven, integrated washing machine and dishwasher, Neff induction hob and extractor hood alongside a large fridge-freezer.
To the rear, a door opens to a shared, sunny, cobbled courtyard, with space for your bistro table and chairs, leading on to an outbuilding, ideal for storage.
Take the gently curving staircase up to the first-floor landing, where freshly fitted grey carpet cushions your steps.
Freshen up in the newly fitted shower room on the left, fully tiled and furnished with walk-in shower with stylish, black-edged glass screen, wash basin and WC.
Across the landing, sleep soundly in bedroom one, where feature panelling to the wall and shades of dove grey and white offer a calming feel. With space for a double bed, a shuttered window to the front draws in light.
Next door, the quirky second bedroom is set over two levels. Alongside the main bedroom area, the second level could serve as a dressing room or study, with the option of adding a separate, single bed for the purposes of holiday letting - ideal for families. There is ample room for a double bed on the lower level, beneath a large Velux window.

Steeped in history, pay a visit to Cartmel Priory Gatehouse, the remains of a 12th century Augustinian Priory. Once home to the Lord of Cartmel's Great Room, where he held his manorial court, alongside the porter's chamber and guardhouse. Pledged to the National Trust in 1946, access is granted to the gatehouse on certain days throughout the year.
Explore the quaint cobbled streets and soak up the splendour of the ancient priory, first referenced as far back as 677, when the area was passed on from King Henry II to William Marshal Earl of Pembroke. Then canonised, its history as a place of divine worship was born.
A day at the races is a must. With its National Hunt jump racing commencing on the Whit bank holiday weekend in May and running through to the August bank holiday, with nine fixtures on the calendar. In the quaint, countryside setting, with colourful crowds and carnival atmosphere fairground, Cartmel Racecourse has an olde worlde ambience rarely found.

Good things come in threes, with Rogan & Co and Simon Rogan at Home also available.
Peruse the independent shops such as gift and furniture shop Perfect English or pay a visit to Cartmel Cheeses at Unsworth's Yard and Unsworth's Yard Brewery. No visit to Cartmel would be complete without calling in at Cartmel Village Shop to pick up a slice of artisan quiche, delicious chutney and of course their famous sticky toffee pudding.
Horse enthusiasts can book a tailormade wellness experience with Friesian Horses at Black Horses Limited. With an abundance of footpaths and cycle routes, enjoy the fresh air and countryside of Cartmel, nestled on the cusp of the Lake District.
