Westgate-on-Sea is a seaside town and civil parish in northeast Kent. It is within the Thanet local government district and borders the larger seaside resort of Margate. Its two sandy beaches have remained a popular tourist attraction since the town's development in the 1860s from a small farming community. The town is the subject of Sir John Betjeman's poem, Westgate-on-Sea. Residents have included the 19th-century surgeon Sir Erasmus Wilson and former Archbishop of Canterbury William Temple. The town includes a number of local and Independent Schools, including Chartfield Prep School, St Saviour's C of E Junior school and St Crispins Infant School. There are a range of shops, cafes and restaurants within the town servicing the day to day shopping needs and Westgate offers excellent transport links to the surrounding seaside towns by bus, rail and road and with its Mainline link to London the commuters are well serviced.
