Oscar Wilde spent time at this very house. In August 1876 Wilde wrote from Dublin to his friend William Ward:

"I am with that dear Mahaffy every day. He has a charming house by the sea here, on a place called the Hill of Howth (one of the crescent horns that shuts in the Bay of Dublin), the only place near town with fields of yellow gorse, and stretches of wild myrtle, red heather and ferns . . . . I arrived just too late to go on a charming party to the North of Ireland - Mahaffy, Seyss (Sayce) of Queen's Appleton the editor of the Academy and my brother�. Mahaffy's book, of Travels in Greece will soon be out. I have been correcting his proofs and like it immensely."
