Description

This two-bedroom loft apartment is set within a striking building designed in 2014 by Mukenbeck + Partners. Perforated brickwork, hardwood brise soleil and wide ribbon glazing create a distinctive profile from the street, with similar sensitivity employed throughout the internal design. Inside are generous and bright living spaces arranged to establish an easy circulation throughout the plan. Gee Street is brilliantly placed between Old Street, Clerkenwell and Angel.

The Tour

The building has a distinctive and dynamic façade of intricate brickwork, hardwood brise soleil and wide glazing that makes for light interiors. This is an unabashedly urban space balanced by natural materials to establish a welcoming domestic atmosphere. Entry is to a well-kept communal hallway which has lift and stair access to the apartment on the third floor.

The main living space, at the front of the apartment, is wonderfully large with a clear distinction between the seating area and the adjacent kitchen and dining space. The room spans the full width of the apartment, its breadth accentuated by the expansive floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows that draw in a wonderful quality of natural light. Tactile and contemporary materials are used throughout, including white resin flooring, poured concrete, and wood. The kitchen area is in keeping with the building’s industrial aesthetic, with wood-fronted cabinetry and stainless steel worktops balanced by timber panels used here and in the bathroom.

The two peaceful bedrooms sit at the rear of the plan, both with carpet underfoot. The main bedroom has an en suite shower room and banks of built-in wardrobes. The second bedroom has poured concrete walls and an almost sculptural flare, absorbing the curvature of the building's striking spiral stair to introduce a convex wall to the space. This room also has access to the rear balcony.

Just off the hallway is the main bathroom, with a bathtub and plenty of storage. There is also further built-in cupboard space in the hallway.

Outside Space

The apartment’s balcony can be accessed via glazed doors from both bedrooms. This is a small space that could be easily greened with some tumbling pot plants.

The Area

Ideally located, Gee Street is within a short walking distance of Farringdon, Barbican, Moorgate, Angel and Old Street stations.

Popular with architects and design studios, the neighbourhood is renowned for the quality and variety of its bars, pubs and restaurants, most notably the nearby St. John and Luca. Exmouth Market, Shoreditch, Covent Garden and Soho are all within walking distance and offer excellent choices for shopping and eating. The Barbican Centre, with its world-class cultural programme of cinema, music, theatre, talks and exhibitions, is a few minutes’ walk from the apartment.

Islington's wonderful Upper Street with its array of shops and cafes is a 20 minutes walk, via the centre of Clerkenwell.
