Sainte-Foy-la-Grande is a charming town in southwestern France, in the Gironde department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It sits right on the banks of the Dordogne River and is actually very close to the border with the Dordogne department itself.
Here's a quick overview:
History: It was founded in the 13th century (around 1255) as a bastide, which is a type of fortified town typical of medieval southwestern France. These towns were often built with a grid street plan and a central market square - and Sainte-Foy-la-Grande still shows that classic layout today.
Vibe: Even though it's small, it has a very lively feel. It's known for its beautiful old architecture - timber-framed houses, narrow cobblestone streets, and arcades. The town has an authentic, slightly "undiscovered" charm compared to bigger tourist hubs nearby.
Market: One of the big highlights is its Saturday market, which is considered one of the best in the region. Local produce, cheese, wine, flowers - super colourful and lively. People travel from miles around for it.
Location: It's really well-positioned - close to Bergerac (20 min drive), Bordeaux (around an hour), and surrounded by vineyards, since it's near areas like Bergerac wine country and not far from Bordeaux's wine regions.
Lifestyle: Lots of British expats have settled there in recent years, drawn by the relaxed lifestyle and affordability compared to bigger cities. There's a good mix of French locals and international residents.
Things to do: Apart from wandering the town itself, it's a great base for outdoor activities - canoeing on the Dordogne River, hiking, wine tasting, exploring nearby medieval villages like Eymet or Issigeac.
It's a little gem if you like history, food, wine, and riverside scenery.
