Description
The Tour
The apartment lies within a handsome London stock-brick building on Fleur De Lis Street. It was once a rope warehouse, which was converted into flats in 1994. It is accessed via a well-maintained communal hallway with stairs that ascend to the second floor.
Entry is to the open-plan core of the space, which has been subtly divided between kitchen, dining and living areas. The latter is on the westerly edge of the room, in front of a wide window that overlooks the area's breadth of architectural styles. Low shelving runs along the width of the room, providing an unobtrusive space to store books and/or records. Wooden floorboards run throughout the entire space, while the walls are washed with a simple white paint.
A trio of skylights extend above, guiding the way from the sitting room to the kitchen. The cabinetry has been finished in the playful royal blue shade 'Drawing Room Blue' by Farrow & Ball, which is offset by a stone countertop and tiled splash-back by Bert and May. A deft use of space, high-level cabinetry has been slotted into an arch while appliances have been cleverly integrated. An island adds storage and has an attractive chequerboard work surface.
The apartment's airy primary bedroom also lies on this level. It has a generous bank of seamless built-in wardrobes and is beautifully lit by a skylight above and a window to one side. Floorboards are by Bert and May, with walls painted in Farrow & Ball's 'Vert de Terre'.
A new spiral staircase ascends from the living space to the mezzanine level, where a secondary living space and additional bedroom unfold. Both are spacious yet cocooning spaces set beneath the sloping eaves. The exposed timber frame - a reminder of the building's early history - runs along one side.
Grounded by romantic terracotta tiles by Bert and May, the bathroom lies downstairs, with a walk-in shower and a roll-top bath. A skylight illuminates the room's posy pink walls, 'Pink Ground' by Farrow and Ball', and subtle sage-painted accents. Storage has again been well accounted for here, both in a fitted cupboard and beneath the porcelain sink.
The Area
On quiet Fleur De Lis Street, a name which is thought to relate to the Huguenot community that settled in the area during the 17th century, is close to yet peacefully removed from the buzz of Brick Lane and Shoreditch. Some of London's best bars, restaurants and provisors are in easy reach, including Leila’s Shop, Rochelle Canteen, and Blue Mountain School, and remains a magnet for creative businesses. It is under a short from Columbia Road and Redchurch Street, where there is Jolene Bakery, The Smoking Goat and Michelin-star restaurant Brat, as well as the famous weekly flower market. Spitalfields and Broadway Market are also within easy walking distance.
Bethnal Green is a short walk to the east and is home to some brilliant pubs, including The Carpenter's Arms and The Sun, as well as some excellent restaurants/cafés including Bistrotheque and stalwart E Pellicci. We've written about the area in greater detail in our Journal.
For green space, Weavers Fields and Haggerston Park are reachable in around 20 minutes. Hackney and Spitalfields City Farms, as well as the Regent’s Canal, are also a short walk away.
Shoreditch High Street is the nearest station, with services on the London Overground running to Highbury and Islington and Dalston Junction in one direction and Clapham Junction in the other. The Underground can be picked up at Liverpool Street (Central, Circle, Hammersmith and City, Metropolitan lines) or Old Street (Northern line).
