CASTELLI - TERAMO PROVINCE
Occupying one of the most dramatic settings in Abruzzo, the small town of Castelli is on a spur in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. It is surrounded by thick forests and the stark, dramatic cliffs of Monte Camicia, which soars to a height of 2,564 metres above sea level and is popular with experienced climbers.
The town belongs to the prestigious ‘Italy-s Most Beautiful Villages- programme and is located at 497 metres above sea level. Although there aren-t many sites in Castelli itself there are still some 16th Century buildings to admire. Its charm, however, lies in the many attractive views along alleyways which are framed by mountain peaks and dense forests.
Due to the large deposits of clay found in the area Castelli has long been known in Abruzzo and beyond for hand painted ceramics, particularly from the Middle Ages until today. There is even a Ceramics Museum which is installed in an old Franciscan Convent displaying many historic items. A ceramics trade fair is held every August. This together with craft shops found in the historic centre offers visitors and residents, alike, the possibility of precious purchases.
Castelli and the surrounding area, boasts many good restaurants.
