River Usk
The Usk has always been known as the second Salmon river in Wales to the Wye. Much work by the Wye and Usk Foundation (wyeuskfoundation.org) has turned around its fortunes and it is now perhaps the most desirable river in Wales for both catch, aesthetics and easy access. There are three named pools marked on the plan ideal for salmon but trout can be caught along the entire beat.
The Upper Tower Fishery is a family owned stretch of single bank fishing which in living memory has been lightly fished. The fishing is let via the Wye Usk Foundation "passport" scheme. There are sporadic catch records which would indicate that 5-8 salmon a year would be expected. Brown trout are in abundance and there are good opportunities for sea trout.
The Wye & Usk Foundation's website provides the following information: "- Just over half a mile of left bank Usk trout and salmon fishing, a few miles downstream of Brecon. With some excellent salmon pools, and long trout runs with a good flow, this is superb Usk fishing. The beat feels very private, with easy access and nice open sections.
Wading is easy on this beat, with the riverbed being a mixture of silt and gravel, but anglers are warned that there are some very deep pools with potentially quite strong flows. The banks are very steep in places, so anglers need to also know their entry/exit points to ensure they take care when wading."
Please note that during the summer months, a Bull may be present in the field used to access the fishery.
