Hayling Island lies between Chichester and Portsmouth, jutting out into the water of Portsmouth Harbour. There is a long and popular beach with golf course, and there are a number of local shops including supermarket and three express versions of other well known supermarkets on the island together with schools, churches, restaurants and other leisure facilities.
The A27 to the north provides good links to the national motorway network and a mainline station is located at Havant with regular services to London Waterloo in about 1 hour 25 minutes.
The cathedral city of Chichester lies some 13 miles to the east. Its historic pedestrian centre provides extensive shopping facilities and other attractions including Pallant House Gallery, home to one of the most significant modern art collections on the south coast, and the internationally known Festival Theatre. The rich countryside of the South Downs National Park is the setting for many picturesque villages and country pubs, providing plenty of opportunities for walking, riding and mountain biking.
The city of Portsmouth, some 9 miles to the west, has many attractions including an excellent range of shopping facilities, the historic Portsmouth Naval Dockyards, home to HMS Warrior and HMS Victory, and the excellent shopping and leisure facilities of Gun Wharf Quays. There are regular ferries to the Isle of Wight and cross-channel ferry services reaching France in around 5 hours.
