Description

This smart one-bedroom apartment is on the first floor of a handsome Victorian townhouse on Powis Square, near Westbourne Grove, Portobello Road and Notting Hill. A double-height living space forms the crux of the plan, with a towering trio of sash windows set in a wide bay. Its spaces have been cleverly configured to sit separate from one another while forming part of a subtly interconnected whole.

The Tour

Powis Square is a peaceful residential road set back from, but within easy reach of, the buzz of the surrounding area. Entry is via a set of steps that lead to a smart black front door; beyond is a communal hallway and staircase that leads to the apartment’s private first-floor entrance.

From here is a hallway that reaches to the light-filled living space at the fore. Solid oak floorboards ground much of the plan and charcoal-grey cast-iron radiators warm throughout.

A tripartite bay floods the room with light, enhancing the warm tones of the surrounding exposed brick walls. The room lends itself well to flexible arrangements; the current owners have placed a large dining table in the space in front of the window, and a relaxed seating area behind.

The kitchen extends from the entrance hallway and has attractive bespoke cabinets above and below a natural stone countertop. A four-ring hob is set beneath a cut-out section of wall, a clever detail that allows for simultaneous cooking and hosting.

Tall doors concertina to reveal the bedroom, also at the rear of the apartment. When left open, the light from a sash window amplifies that from the living room sash windows. A bank of cupboards on one side provides plenty of storage space, while built-in shelves opposite provide a space for books and a reading light.

A dark counterpoint to the otherwise bright plan, the bathroom lies off the entrance hallway. Slate grey tiles wrap part of its walls and ground a walk-in shower with a large rainfall-style shower head above. A copper sink reflects light and sits above an antique wooden Unit.

The Area

One of west London’s most desirable areas, Powis Square is situated opposite the Tabernacle theatre and is five minutes’ walk from the boutiques of Westbourne Grove and Portobello Road, including its world-famous market.

The immediate area is replete with popular places to eat, including the two Michelin-starred Ledbury, Granger & Co and Ottolenghi. Further bars, restaurants and pubs can be found in nearby Notting Hill, as can The Electric Cinema and popular Notting Hill Arts Club. We’ve written more about the area in our Journal.

Transport connections in the area are excellent, with Westbourne Park and Ladbroke Grove (Hammersmith & City and Circle line), and Notting Hill Gate (Central line) all within approximately 10 minutes' walk away.
