History
Bawburgh is a charming and historic village in Norfolk, situated on the River Yare, just a few miles West of Norwich. The village has a rich history dating back to Saxon times and is best known as the birthplace of St. Walstan, one of Norfolk`s most revered saints. According to legend, Walstan was a noble born boy who renounced his wealth to live a humble life as a farmworker. After his death in the early 11th Century, miraculous springs reportedly emerged at the places where his body rested on its journey to burial, one of which is in Bawburgh. His shrine at the village church of St. Mary and St. Walstan became a place of pilgrimage during the medieval period. Bawburgh has long been associated with agriculture and milling, with a watermill recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The mill continued operating for centuries, contributing to the village`s economy. Today, Bawburgh retains much of its historic charm, with a number of period properties, a picturesque riverside setting, and a strong sense of community. The village is also home to The Kings Head, a historic pub that dates back to the 17th century, offering a glimpse into Bawburghs past while serving as a focal point for local life.
