West Smithfield and the EC1A area is the most historic quarter of the City of London - the medieval St Bartholomew the Great church and St Barts Hospital (founded in 1123), Cloth Fair (named after the medieval Bartholomew Fair which took place for centuries in Smithfield) and Pie Corner (where the Great Fire of London was stopped!) are all close.

Smithfield Meat Market is set to close in 2028 after 900 years of market trading on this site and the Victoria market buildings will be redeveloped and repurposed. The Museum of London is set to open in one of the old disused market buildings in coming years as the London Museum.
