The National Trust is the largest conservation charity in Europe, and our purpose is to look after places of historic interest or natural beauty for the benefit of the nation. We do this through the ownership and management of special places. Our properties include over 25,000 buildings, of which more than 5,000 are houses and cottages.

The role that tenants play in enabling the Trust to deliver its core aims and objectives is vital. Without their commitment to the preservation of our properties the Trust simply could not achieve the significant amount of conservation and preservation that it delivers on an annual basis. As such the Trust grants initial tenancies of 6 to 12 months following which, on the assumption both parties are content with the situation, longer occupation is often encouraged.
