The ancient parish of Mouswald in Nithsdale, situated 2km northwest of Carrutherstown and 10 km southeast of Dumfries in south-west Scotland, lies on the B724 south of the A75 and affords views southward over the Solway Firth. 

The nearest primary schools are Collin and Carrutherstown, with the nearest secondary being Dumfries High School. Close local amenities such as a post office, hair salons, village and community halls, a veterinary centre, fuel station, local shops and food outlets can be found in nearby Dumfries. Dumfries town centre offers several major supermarkets, popular high street shops, a shopping centre, further schooling, a university campus, a range of cafes and bistros and medical facilities. The region is renowned for its outdoor pursuits, beaches, leisure facilities, social events, festivals and history. Dumfries is also the historic home of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns. There is a regular local bus service into Dumfries town centre. Various other close transport links, including Dumfries train station, provide links to Carlisle and Glasgow. Major bus links can be accessed from the Loreburn Centre, Whitesands or Burns Statue.

There is easy access to the beautiful coastline and a variety of sporting and country pursuits, including sailing, horse riding, mountain biking, fishing, golf and fine coastal and woodland walks.  Dumfries Railway Station provides regular links to Glasgow and the south, as does the bus station situated on the Whitesands by the River Nith. The M6 and M74 road networks are accessible nearby at Moffat, Gretna and Lockerbie.
