Description

Steeped in history, this four storey, three bedroom end of terrace home is quintessential Bridgnorth, dating from 1580 it must be one of the oldest properties in the town and has a wealth of period features.

Grade II Listed Bridgend Cottage offers most spacious accommodation of 105 sq meters arranged over four floors, the front door is ancient and gives a clue to the character of property within. The ground floor full width reception room has a heavily beamed ceiling, multi-pane windows and a typically Shropshire corner fireplace, off the reception room is access to cellar storage and a cloakroom with w.c., a staircase to the rear of the reception room opens to the first floor landing off which are double opening glazed doors to the first floor living room and a door to the kitchen, fitted with cream coloured cabinetry and a Aga range cooker, off the kitchen is a lobby with access to the bathroom fitted with a white suite comprising panel bath with shower over, pedestal wash hand basin and low flush w.c., a door from the kitchen leads to the garden. The first floor living room is a period delight, the focal point of which is an inglenook fireplace with heavy beam over, fitted multifuel stove set on a quarry tiled hearth, the fire back has herringbone brickwork, an inscription in the plasterwork over and above the fire place gives the date that the property was built, the ceiling is heavily beamed as are ceilings throughout. Up a step off the living room is the dining room, facing out over historic Cartway it features a corner fireplace and has a turning staircase to the second floor where there are two double bedrooms. The principal full width double bedroom at the front has a dormer window overlooking Cartway, the second bedroom has a turning staircase to the attic bedroom, currently utilised as an office with a skylight window to the rear. Outside the kitchen door is a private and enclosed brick paved patio sitting out area off which stairs lead up to a decked sitting out area with a surprisingly large low maintenance rear garden gravelled and paved with shrubs to the side and providing views towards the River Severn.

Bridgend Cottage was built when Queen Elizabeth 1, last of the Tudors, and daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn was on the throne, the cottage survived the siege of the town by Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War of 1643 when much of the town was ravaged by fire and the castle was largely destroyed, today the remains of castle keep lean at an angle greater than that of the leaning tower of Pisa. Cartway is an ancient and notable street in the town, it was originally cobbled and the route for donkeys hauling goods up the winding street into the town from the quayside.

The aspirational market town of Bridgnorth has a wide variety of amenities including well regarded schools for children of all ages, a doctors surgery, a selection of supermarkets, local and high street shops, pharmacies, opticians, traditional public houses, restaurants, a characterful theatre and petrol stations at vantage points, the nearby Cliff Railway, the steepest inland railway in the country is a unique route into the town centre.
