The municipality covers an area of 664.5 sqm and consists of six parishes: Ourique, Conceição, Garvão, Panóias, Santa Luzia, and Santana da Serra.

Ourique holds historical significance as the site of the Battle of Ourique in 1139, where D. Afonso Henriques defeated five Moorish kings, consolidating Portugal's independence. The Castle of Ourique, of Islamic origin, was rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries but gradually lost its strategic importance. Today, only remnants remain, including a viewpoint offering panoramic views.
