INTRODUCTION

Originally built in 1650, Beacholme offers an extraordinarily rare opportunity to acquire one of the most exclusive and sensational beachfront properties on the Yorkshire coastline. In the very heart of Robin Hood's Bay albeit perfectly tucked away on the edge of the sea, this remarkable home occupies a truly privileged position, offering expansive, uninterrupted sea views. Homes of this calibre - with direct beach access, panoramic views, and a front row seat to the Jurassic coastline - are incredibly scarce and almost never come to market. Whether you're dreaming of a serene coastal retreat to call home or an utterly unique holiday escape, this exceptional property delivers on every level, combining comfort, character, and an unrivalled location by the sea.

Upon entry, you are greeted by a beautiful entrance hallway that offers an immediate sense of warmth and calm. Designed to capture and frame the spectacular scenery through every window, the living area is beautifully laid out in an 'L' shape with built-in window seats, inviting the outdoors in. Opening through elegant French doors, the private balcony soaks up the vista, offering effortless relaxation whether you are reclining indoors or basking in the sea air with the continuous sounds of the waves.

On the ground floor, lies a retro style kitchen that beautifully flows into the adjoining dining room, creating a harmonious space that balances functionality with refined style. The dining area opens directly onto a private south facing terrace through French doors, boasting perfectly positioned and intimate spots for conversation, reading, or quiet reflection. Surrounding the terrace is an impeccably manicured display of lush evergreen plants and flower beds chosen not only for their beauty but their resilience in the salty sea breeze; all taken care of by the automated watering system whilst your away.

Ascending to the second floor, there are two fabulous bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, one of which has sensory privacy glass, which magically changes from clear to opaque as you enter; both finished to an exceptional standard with sleek fittings, electric blinds, and calming tones. Alike all the windows in Beacholme, expansive sea views are framed throughout the bedrooms and bathrooms, constantly reminding you of the home's unparalleled position. Occupying the entirety of the top floor is the principal bedroom suite. Framed by characterful beams, the windows are perfectly positioned so that the first thing you see upon waking is the open sea and morning sunlight. The en-suite bathroom is indulgently styled, even with sea views from the shower!

Beacholme holds a rich and fascinating history, deeply connected to the early life of Barbara Hepworth. During the 1910s, Barbara spent her childhood family holidays in this very property and was so inspired by the stunning views, she painted many of her classic masterpieces, from her bedroom window. The dramatic coastline, cliffs, and natural beauty left a lasting impression on her, playing a formative role in shaping her artistic sensibilities and became a major influence on her sculpture artwork beginning in the 1920s, where organic forms, textures, shapes and a deep connection to nature became central themes.

Beacholme’ s unique character and unrivalled position took centre stage in 2015, when the property was featured in Channel 4 television’s series 'Homes By The Sea'.

Additionally, The Hairy Bikers filmed an episode of their series 'The Hairy Bikers Go North: Yorkshire Coast' in Beacholme in 2021, where they bought some local langoustines and cooked them on the balcony. Interestingly in 2011, Johnny Vegas recorded his popular 'Shedtown' radio series on the same terrace at Beacholme.

Beacholme is a piece of living history, only previously passed down the generations through word of mouth: this is a once in a lifetime chance to own something irreplaceable.

ENVIRONS

The History:

Robin Hood's Bay is an idyllic fishing village dating back to the 16th Century and has a romantic picturesque appearance overhanging the sea. Designated in 1995 as an area of conservation for its architectural and historic interest, the village is infamous for its winding, steep cobbled pathways lined with colourful flowerpots and cottages clinging to ravine sides. Dominating the scene of Robin Hood's Bay is the coast itself, and the charming cascade of red pantile roofs, whitewashed stone-built cottages, and quaint porches.

Evidence indicates that the surrounding area was first settled over 3000 years ago during the Stone Age. The steep road connects the old part of the village to the more modern development at the top of the bank. The first school opened in 1810, occupying two cottages in The Square; the National School was later formed in 1814, and navigation schools were created by retired master mariners.

When the railway arrived here in 1885, the area grew to where rich sea captains lived and local fishermen supplied the City of York with fish and vast quantities of crabs and lobsters. During this time, the railway opened a wider curiosity as the bay began to attract visitors and a colony of artists from the end of the First World War. Early historic Ordnance Survey mapping suggest development of the cliff top in the mid-Victorian times with guesthouses and hotels being built. Beacholme itself was originally home to a local joiner and boat building craftsman serving the fishermen.

Amenities:

Robin Hood's Bay boasts an abundance of cafes and fine eateries including the delightful The Galley on the Quarterdeck, Tea, Toast and Post (Travellers Food Choice 2024) to the haute cuisine and panoramic views of The Victoria Hotel, which hosted the stage set for Daniel Day-Lewis' 'Phantom Thread'. Oh, and not forgetting Robin Hood's Bay's ultimate seaside special, fish and chips. There's also a wet fish shop, should you prefer to cook your own, or a simply relax on the terrace at Beacholme, gazing out to sea with a fresh lobster salad and a glass of wine from the Bay's own exclusive vineyard. In a word, this hidden picture postcard hamlet, literally has it all.

There are a wonderful array of independent shops from Berties of Bay selling local ganseys, The Old Drapery, and the famous resident local artist John Henny. Treat yourself at Dollies Sweet Shop or at their ice cream van on the beach, or Browns Chocolates, explore the gifts at Jessica Hogarth, or perhaps discover the Yorkshire gins, beers, homeware, Vinyl, and bespoke upcycling service at The Higgledy Pig. One thing you won't find in Robin Hood's Bay is an amusement arcade!

The Bay hosts two convenience stores, a post office, and a doctors surgery. Only four miles away towards Whitby are a plethora of supermarkets including Aldi and Sainsbury's, and a petrol station too. The coastal town of Whitby lies just a 15-minute drive away where you will find more beautiful beach walks, coastal paths, and the magnificent Abbey.

For travelling and commuting, there is an amazing bus service to Scarborough and Middlesbrough every 30 minutes. Railway services also operate from Whitby and Scarborough with direct links to York, Leeds, and London Kings Cross.

Recreational:

The National Trust's Old Coastguard Station offers a fantastic visitor centre with interesting history on fossils, sea life, and tales of smugglers, as does the local dinosaur shop. There is a Robin Hood's Bay Museum situated in the Old Coroner's Room and Mortuary displaying similar local history of shipwrecks and rescues, and a unique model of a smugglers house. For those desiring even more of the past, the notorious Ghost Walk takes you through the streets and alleyways whilst listening to the tales of the strange and supernatural. Woven into the heritage of the Bay is traditional folk music that has been passed down through the generations, often sung in The Wainwright Bar at The Bar Hotel and annual folk weekend in June. Additionally, there is an independent art group who encourage locals and visitors to join and develop their artistic talents.

Robin Hood's Bay has its own tennis courts and Bowling Club in addition to W.I and a Village Hall. There is an incredibly popular walk in a circular amble across the Bay's beach and over the cliff path, which is just over 2km long and takes around 2 hours. The walk begins down the slipway at low tide onto the beach, eventually reaching an inlet called Boggle Hole at the other end of the Bay. The caves here are a place where smugglers often landed their illegal contraband! The path continues to take you back to Robin Hood's Bay along the clifftop following The Cleveland Way Trail. The North Yorkshire Moors are also home to some breath-taking scenic trails, and if biodiversity and archaeology interests you, the Fylingdales Moor Conservation Project offers guided nature trails.

Ideal for those thrill seekers, the North Yorkshire Off Road Centre situated on the edge of the Bay, offers a 4X4 Land Rover driving experience with a range of defenders and discoveries, to test your skills.
