Description
Faraway House is an exceedingly unique single storey residence which was designed for the vendors by Charles Greenberg of Chamberlain, Powell and Bon, the Architects who designed The Barbican in London. Built about 50 years ago, this contemporary building is designed and centred around a partly covered garden courtyard onto which a number of the principal rooms open.
The property has brick exterior elevations under a slated roof and has roomy and adaptable accommodation that is particularly flexible in its arrangement. It has been the home of a Sculptor and Artist and is presented in an individual, eclectic style that creates a unique ambience. The artistic influence continues through to the garden which has been designed to create not only a harmonious setting for the property itself but secret and secluded areas through which many paths wend their way. At the bottom of the garden is a swimming pool (in need of attention) with fenced area, changing room and other stores. There is also a beautifully painted travelling Showman's Caravan dating from the 1890s, as well as a summerhouse.
Faraway House is now in need of considerable refurbishment, however represents an extremely rare opportunity to create a magnificent and truly unique home nestled in one of East Devon’s most picturesque country settings.
GARDENS & GROUNDS.
The property is approached from the lane to a large gravelled parking area with space for numerous vehicles. Heavy double wrought iron gates then lead into the walled garden itself where there is a timber summerhouse/retreat and a range of useful outbuildings currently used as studio/store rooms. The gardens, as mentioned, offer complete protected seclusion by the tall brick wall which surrounds them ensuring a complete sun trap. They are stocked with a great variety of colourful plants, shrubs and trees too numerous to mention individually, and all combine to create a somewhat magical setting for this truly unique house.
To the north west of the plot, adjacent to the parking area, is a sheltered pond dominated by a large and splendid Copper Beech tree and other shrubs.
In all the grounds extend to about 0.86 acre.
SITUATION.
Faraway House is situated in secret walled garden, formerly the kitchen garden to Netherton Hall, a nearby Jacobean country mansion. Set in grounds of approaching an acre that offers complete privacy, the property nestles in the beautiful and highly desirable Farway Valley which in turn sits in the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The walled gardens are extremely sheltered and the property enjoys a southerly aspect and stands in the eye of the sun.
Farway is a tiny scattered village with a small primary school, pretty Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels and village hall. The bustling market town of Honiton lies approximately 4 miles to the north with its range of shops, bank, schools, sports centre/ swimming pool and main line rail link to London Waterloo. Access to the World Heritage Jurassic Coast in Lyme Bay can be found approximately 5 miles to the south and Colyton Grammar School, one of England's top mixed state grammar schools, lies approximately 5 miles to the south.
The Cathedral City of Exeter lies some 18 miles to the west with an excellent shopping centre, theatres, cinemas, main line express rail link to London Paddington, M5 access and international airport. Sidmouth, East Devon's premier coastal resort, is some 7 miles distant and well known for its Gothic Regency architecture. It has a long esplanade, wide pebble (sand at low tide) beaches and is situated on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast.
DIRECTIONS.
From Honiton High Street proceed into New Street in the centre of the town and follow this road up Church Hill, bearing left at the mini-roundabout, then right, up to the Honiton Golf Club with the Club House on your right hand side. Turn first right signposted Farway 2 miles and Northleigh and follow this road turning right on a sharp left hand bend at Bucknole Cross. Follow the lane down through the woods past the entrance gate to Netherton Hall. Do not drop down the hill to the ford but carry on and the large parking area to the property will be found on your right hand side after about 50 yards.
